A Step closer

Episode 6 The last few months of the year felt like a dream for Maya. Ever since she started working closely with Miss Mthembu and Liam, her love for art and photography had grown stronger than ever. Every week brought a new adventure — from visiting art galleries in Durban to exploring hidden parts of the city that most people never noticed. Miss Mthembu had become more than just a mentor; she was like a second mother to Maya, guiding her through every lesson and challenge. “Remember, Maya,” she often said, “a good photographer doesn’t just capture what they see — they capture what they feel.” Those words stayed in Maya’s mind every time she picked up her camera. Liam, on the other hand, was more like a creative partner. The two of them worked on projects together — experimenting with lighting, nature shots, and street photography. They spent hours comparing angles and discussing how art could change the way people viewed the world. By December, Maya’s confidence had blossomed. Her skills had improved, and so had her determination. When the news came that her university tuition had been fully paid, she couldn’t stop smiling. She felt like her hard work, prayers, and patience were finally paying off. At home, things were also looking up. Emily was adjusting well to her receptionist job, and her mother seemed happier knowing that her daughters were finding their way in life. The small house in Umlazi felt lighter — filled with laughter and hope again. When the new year finally arrived, it was time for Maya to leave for university. Her suitcase was packed neatly, and her beloved camera hung proudly around her neck. Her mother hugged her tightly, whispering, “Go and make us proud, my girl. Don’t forget where you come from.” Tears filled Maya’s eyes, but they were tears of joy. She was finally stepping into a new chapter — one she had dreamed of for so long. As the taxi drove her toward Durban’s campus roads, she looked out the window and smiled at the world passing by. The trees, the people, the sunrise — everything looked brighter, more alive. She whispered softly, “This is it. The start of something beautiful."
