Chapter 2

785 Words
The photo shows a room number: 2202. Peter and I were staying in room 2201. Cruise Belle: I am waiting for you… My legs suddenly went limp, and I barely managed to stay on my feet. The scent of strawberries kept drifting out of the bathroom… and suddenly a memory burst into my mind. Peter, who had always prioritized work over everything else, first proposed that we go on a luxury cruise trip. But he had thalassophobia and mild seasickness. Every time I suggested we go to the seaside, he always shook his head and turned me down. Yet this time, he was unusually invested in the trip. He was extremely proactive, whether it was booking tickets or packing luggage. On every trip we took together, I was the one running around taking care of all the preparations. I asked him why he suddenly wanted to go on a cruise. All he said was, "Didn't you mention you wanted to go before? I'll go anywhere you want. I'd go through anything for you. I want to make you the happiest wife in the whole world!" I was so moved that I cried, and prepared a whole stack of motion sickness pills for him overnight. Only now did I realize how ridiculous I had been! The strawberry scent filled my nose, and turned into tiny needles piercing my lungs. I could barely breathe from the pain. Was this just her unrequited crush, or had Peter also fallen for her? I sent a message to the front desk, asking them to check who the registered guest of room 2202 was. Right after I sent the message, the front desk instantly replied. I was so startled that I dropped my phone immediately. At that moment, I regretted it. I did not dare open the message. Probably, even the second I sent that message, I was already certain that Peter had cheated on me. The first thing he did when he walked out of the bathroom was check his phone. Watching the faint upward curve of his lips, I held back my tears and stared intently at the TV show playing in front of me, yet I could not take in a single thing that was happening on screen. "Marie," Peter hugged me from behind with a face full of guilt, "What should I do? The company suddenly has an emergency online meeting I need to attend…" He looked very troubled. "I promised to have lunch with you, but now you'll have to go alone. I'm sorry, baby!" He kissed me on the forehead. That repulsive strawberry scent grew even stronger when he leaned in close, and I unconsciously moved back a little. Peter picked up on my odd mood, and held me tighter. "Baby, once I'm done with this work, I'll come straight back to make it up to you, okay?" Tears kept welling up in my eyes. I held onto his hand tightly and would not let go. But he could not see anything at all. The only thing he could see was the chat box with Belle. He shook his hand out of mine in a hurry, mumbled a few half-hearted words of comfort to me, then hurried off. My heart turned completely cold the second I heard the door click shut in the next room. I picked up the phone I'd thrown away earlier. It was no surprise, Room 2202 was registered to Peter. Tears began to stream down my face unbidden, for I no longer had the strength to lie to myself. Tracing the clues from the photo, I found the girl's account and sent her a friend request under the pretense of asking about a tour. I opened her page to check her posts, and a photo of roses after another popped up on my screen. Congratulations to Ms. Belle White for winning Top Salesperson of the Quarter! The last photo showed her hand wearing a diamond ring. On that long, slender, fair finger rested a three-carat diamond. It was so beautiful it made my heart ache, because that ring was the exact same style as our wedding rings. Peter always said that people should always think three steps ahead, and having a backup for everything would make life more secure. At first, I adored that about him. I'm the kind of person who never planned anything, so it was perfect. I needed a husband who could organize everything for me. Even when he got an extra backup wedding ring, I just thought it was him being thorough and conscientious. After ten years of marriage, it never once crossed my mind that this backup wasn't just for things. It was for people too!
