Anne disappeared for a few moments to ask for her parents’ permission, and then came out into the sunny church garden. Dimitri was waiting for her there, hesitant as ever. The idea of a walk with Anne enthused him, but he would have preferred to avoid the Municipal Gardens, where he was in danger of meeting Evdoxia and Aspasia. And just the thought that his old friends might see him with an English girl, when he had let months go by without giving any sign of life, made him want to cut and run.
