Later that day, when Pavlos came to pick up Dimitri, it was Phrossou who opened the door to him. She was dressed now in a plain blue gown, with sandals on her feet to replace her white court shoes. Dimitri raced down from his room to greet Pavlos, and found him scrutinising the young woman with evident interest. As soon as the two boys were alone in the road, Pavlos was quick to congratulate his friend.
“You lucky devil,” he said, “to have a person like that in your house to wake you up in the morning. A world away from our Chariklou, who has a moustache and weighs 200 pounds.”
Dimitri had not - yet - considered Phrossou from this perspective. He was indignant.
