Such was the state of affairs for Dimitri on that Sunday, when, after breakfasting alone on the veranda of the hotel, he had gone out for a walk to the harbour and had happened to meet Maria, who must have arrived on the Kallis morning bus, or by taxi. Now Dimitri, having quarrelled with his father, who had just announced the date of the wedding, was hurrying to the address given to him by Maria. He had already passed in front of the Church of Archangel Michael and was walking past the pier, with the dark mass of Kyrenia castle facing him on the opposite side of the harbour.
