Chapter 6 • The enclosed garden Half an hour later, the taxi with Sarah and Dimitri in it was climbing up the narrow road towards the heights of St Hilarion. Two and a half years had already gone by since that spring day, when the grown-up world had forced its way into Dimitri’s childish life. And it felt as if it had all been lived through by somebody else. The taxi stopped in front of the entrance to the garden. Sarah pulled a ten-shilling note and a couple of two-shilling pieces out of her bag for the fare, together with a large bunch of keys. The heavy metal garden gate swung open, squeaking on its rusty hinges. The stone path meandered before them. The villa had lost none of its magic. On the contrary, the complete absence of any other human being made the sounds of every presence
