Three buildings stood overbearing on the skyline of the capital city, Highland. The largest and most awe-inspiring of the structures was the royal palace, built three centuries ago and which languished in a period of constant reconstruction and renewal. Its edifice of gold and silver stone stood vigil over the city where, during the night, lights hidden within its crevices gave a soft glow for miles away. Within the city, it was only possible to lose sight of the palace only in the deepest corners where the thought of the authority of law was best forgotten.
