Chapter 9 : Afterglow

The dawn bled pink over the river, turning the water to liquid fire. Leila sat on the cracked concrete of the dock, Mia’s head resting in her lap, the sketchbook cracked open to a half‑finished sunrise. The scent of diesel and rain lingered, but the air felt lighter, as if the night had finally exhaled. Rae lay on a stretcher, an IV drip in his arm, his chest bandaged. His eyes tracked the sky, a flicker of disbelief crossing his face when he saw Leila smile. “You saved us,” he whispered, voice hoarse. Leila brushed a smear of charcoal from his cheek. “We saved each other.” She flipped a page, revealing a quick sketch of two silhouettes holding hands against a broken chain. “Maybe this story doesn’t end here.” Kira approached, badge clipped to her coat, a file tucked under her arm. “Dante’s in custody. The rest of his crew is being rounded up. The DA wants to talk to both of you—Rae for immunity, Leila for witness protection.” Rae’s jaw tightened. “Immunity for what? I killed men.” Kira’s eyes softened. “You saved lives. The law can be… flexible when the cause is just.” Mia stirred, wiping tears from her eyes. “I… I didn’t know. All this because of me.” Leila hugged her tighter. “None of this is your fault. We chose.” A soft chime sounded—her phone buzzed with a message. An art gallery in the city, *“Exhibit: Shadows We Keep”*, invitation for a show featuring the sketches from the sketchbook. A chance to turn pain into something beautiful. Rae glanced at the invitation, then at Leila. “You deserve that.” She nodded, a tear slipping down. “We both do.”
