Chapter 8

Georgia listened to the shameful, lewd sounds coming from inside, and the last flicker of light in her eyes died out completely. She couldn't even remember how she stumbled out of the banquet hall. The cold wind bit into her skin, and she felt as if someone had ripped her heart right out of her chest, shattering it into a million pieces on that cold, dark night. ***** The next day, Georgia came down with a terrible fever. Dragging her aching, heavy body, she forced herself to head to the hospital. She was sitting on a bench in the hospital corridor waiting for her number to be called when she heard Ophelia's voice drifting over. "Felix, I've got my test results. The doctor said our baby is perfectly healthy. You just focus on your meeting, okay?" Georgia looked over instinctively, and the unbridled joy on Ophelia's face stung her sharply. Her gaze fell on the report in Ophelia's hand, and she suddenly recalled what Felix had once told her. "Georgia, as soon as we get married, we'll have a baby. No matter if it's a boy or a girl, I'll give our child the very best love." The memory made Georgia twist her mouth into a bitter, mocking smile before she turned her head away. But when she picked up her medicine and walked out of the hospital, she ran straight into Felix. Their eyes locked, and a flash of panic crossed Felix's face. "Georgia, what are you doing here?" The next second, he spotted the plastic bag of medicine in her hand and tensed up immediately. "What's wrong? Are you sick?" Georgia just stepped back a pace. Felix froze at her reaction, a hurt look crossing his face as he lifted his gaze to hers. "Georgia, are you mad at me? After I dropped Ophelia off at the banquet yesterday, I got cornered by a business partner. You know Stone Group is in a critical growth period right now. I couldn't just ditch our partners and leave…" Georgia stared at him, rushing to make excuses, and a wave of cold, hollow sorrow washed over her. 'Felix, when did you become able to pull lies out of thin air so effortlessly?' She cut him off softly, "Felix, I don't feel well. I want to head back." When he saw her turning to leave, he reached out and grabbed her wrist by instinct. "You're in no shape to head back alone. Let me drive you." Georgia went quiet for a beat, then gave an indifferent, unconcerned nod. But she never expected that Felix wouldn't take her back to her dorm. Instead, he drove her to his standalone villa in the heart of the city. Staring up at the villa, their would-be wedding home, built and decorated entirely to her specifications from floor to ceiling, Georgia suddenly remembered the message Ophelia had sent her. Ophelia: He even let me move into your future marital home first, can you believe that? He didn't notice a thing off about her mood, and led her inside. "Georgia, move in here, yeah? You're gonna be the lady of this house sooner or later, anyway. This way it'll be easier for me to take care of you." He glanced over his shoulder at her, his smile soft and warm enough to make anyone melt. "Just thinking about coming home to you every day makes me feel so happy." Georgia stared at that sweet smile of his, and her heart turned to ice in an instant. He got another woman pregnant, and still had the nerve to spew this disgusting garbage. She huffed a bitter, self-deprecating laugh and mumbled, "Felix, you could never give me happiness…" Her voice was so soft he didn't catch a word of it. He just tugged her over to the couch and sat her down. "Rest here for a bit, okay? I'll boil some water so you can take your medicine." Georgia watched his eager, bustling back, and she didn't feel even a tiny twinge of anything in her chest, no anger, no sadness, just total emptiness. Only seven days left until her flight to London. She'd just treat these last few days as a final, pointless charade together, then cut off all sixteen years of tangled ties between them for good. While Georgia stayed at the villa, Felix came home on time every single day, and Ophelia didn't send a single message. It was the first real stretch of quiet she'd had in months. Eventually, she found the right time to mention her upcoming study abroad program in her family's group chat. Her dad only sent one message. Dad: Georgia, your mom and I will back every single choice you make, 100 percent. Staring at that text, the heavy dark cloud hanging over her heart finally lifted. In the blink of an eye, her departure day arrived. Felix had woken up extra early to make breakfast. He raised an eyebrow at her playfully. "So, my future wife? How's your future husband holding up? Pretty decent, right?" Georgia smiled faintly and answered softly, "Yeah, you're doing great." At least when it came to faking how much he loved her, Felix had always aced the role. Felix grinned back, but before he could get another word out, his phone buzzed to life, ringing loudly. He hung up after only a few seconds, his face instantly turning grave. "Ophelia's in the hospital. I've gotta head over there right now." Georgia stared at him calmly. "Okay." Felix grabbed his jacket, and just before he stepped out the door, he glanced back at Georgia, who was still sitting at the dining table. A random twinge of unease suddenly pricked at his chest, though he couldn't put his finger on why. "Georgia, I'll be back real soon. Be a good girl and wait for me at home, okay?" Georgia pressed her lips together, just about to say something, when she watched Felix spin around and head straight out the door without so much as a pause. She huffed a quiet, bitter laugh and murmured under her breath, "Wow… you really can't wait even a single minute, can you?" She sat at the table for what felt like an eternity before finally pushing herself to her feet and heading upstairs to turn on the printer. With a low, steady hum, the machine spat out printouts of every message Ophelia had ever sent her. She taped each and every one of them all over the villa, covering every last corner of the place. Right as she finished, a flight reminder popped up on her phone. Your flight to London, United Kingdom departs in three hours. Please proceed to boarding promptly. Georgia gazed at the villa plastered wall-to-wall with paper, and let out a soft, cold chuckle before she pulled out her phone and sent Felix a single text. Georgia: Felix, we're done. She attached the pregnancy test report Ophelia had sent her to brag about her pregnancy. She also began to block every single one of Felix's contact methods, then shut her phone off entirely. Afterwards, she pulled open the front door and stepped out into the bright, open future waiting for her. She never looked back, not even once. 'Felix, people who toy with sincere feelings always get burned in the end. I hope every single day of the rest of your life is absolute hell.'
