1: California Dreaming
BANJO’S TRIP TO CALIFORNIA was never going to be straightforward. First, there was the long-awaited rendezvous with Singapore Girl, Cindy Lau, to factor into his flight plan.
In the cavernous Changi International Airport, he spotted the petite and elegant flight attendant walking with the crew in their distinctive batik uniform, pulling a suitcase towards the boarding gate.
He sidled stealthily next to her and said, ‘Hello, beautiful.’
Surprised, Cindy stopped and pivoted on her toes. ‘Well hello, sexy.’
The rest of the crew beamed a smile and moved on, but a couple surreptitiously turned back to check out what appeared to be a romantic reunion. Not true. What they had was a warm but platonic friendship.
Cindy stood on tiptoe to give him a friendly kiss on the cheek at the same time pinched his abdomen.
‘Ouch,’ he said. ‘What was that for?’
‘Just in case you’re getting any ideas.’
He smiled cheekily. Lightly holding her elbow, he escorted her towards the gate and whispered, ‘So, you’re going to look after me?’
She gave him a quizzical look. ‘You’re en route to LAX?’
‘Yeah, beam me up to first class, okay?’ Few would dare ask even jokingly, but Banjo Mabo Cameron’s charming personality had always given him plenty of wiggle room.
‘I’ll see what I can do.’
‘For the love of Queen and country,’ he said, dramatically clutching his chest.
She shook her head.
‘See you on board.’
The Singapore A380 was a big boy. It was a handsome, magnificent and more importantly an excellent flying machine with its Rolls-Royce engines.
On board, Cindy did one better than first class. She got him a seat in the cockpit. When she told him the news, the Aussie could hardly contain his excitement.
‘f**k me!’
‘Not a chance.’
Cindy’s quick repartee earned a sheepish smile from Banjo.
