Chapter Two: This Time, I Rejected Him First

1402 Words
I folded the execution order beneath the lining of my bodice and removed three pages from the smuggling ledger. Taking the whole book would alert Father the moment he checked the compartment, but three missing sheets could pass for old binding damage until the ceremony. I copied the shipment numbers, returned everything else to its exact position, and used Father's private seal on a letter of my own. The one-eyed driver who carried silver ore beyond our territory owed the old groundskeeper his life. I found him behind the carriage house and offered him enough coins to disappear after one final delivery. He did not ask why the envelope was addressed to Ronan Blackwood, Alpha King of the Northlands. Gray Ridge mothers used Ronan's name to frighten disobedient pups. He had killed the uncle who tried to steal his throne, broken three rogue armies along the northern border, and hanged every noble involved in selling Omegas through Blackwood territory. In my first life, I could have offered him Father's ledgers. I had stayed because Lucian promised to protect me. This time, my message contained only three sentences. I have proof that Gray Ridge is selling moon-silver to your enemies. At tomorrow's pairing ceremony, I intend to invoke the old law and marry into another pack. If you are willing to come, both the evidence and my proposed alliance are yours to examine. Lucian entered my room that afternoon without knocking. He wore the black uniform of the Gray Ridge heir, every silver clasp polished, and two guards remained in the corridor behind him. The lack of privacy was deliberate; in his mind, a future Luna belonged to her Alpha before the mark was even placed. His cedar scent struck me first. In my old life, the mate bond had turned that smell into warmth, hunger, and the humiliating instinct to move closer. Now I felt only the remembered ache of a wound that no longer existed. "You missed your final etiquette lesson." Lucian placed a silver collar on my dressing table. It was presented as the Luna's wedding necklace, but old runes inside the clasp strengthened an Alpha command. "The elders will be watching tomorrow. They dislike a wolfless woman who stands too straight." I touched one claw-shaped link and smelled Erin's rose perfume near the catch. "Did she enjoy trying it on?" His expression cooled. Lucian did not explain the perfume or ask whom I meant. He told me not to invent trouble before the ceremony, then began listing the things I would be expected to do as Luna, as if he had not already signed the order for my death. "Do you believe the Moon's choice makes you irreplaceable?" He leaned over the table, caging me between his arms. His eyes flashed with the gray of his wolf. "I can reject the bond. You will be the one who suffers, Selene. You will be the one without a pack." "Then speak quickly tomorrow." I pushed the collar back toward him. "I would hate for you to lose your place in line." His hand closed around my wrist. Alpha pressure filled the room, a force meant to bend my knees before he ever formed an actual command. My body stayed upright. Something buried deep inside me shifted with irritation, and for one brief second I felt the shape of a huge head lifting in darkness. Lucian felt it too. His grip tightened as he searched my face, but Erin's footsteps sounded outside the room before he could test me again. She always walked loudly when she wanted to be discovered near him. I pulled free while he looked at the door. The perfume bottle hidden in my sleeve tapped against my wrist, and Lucian reached for it, mistaking the sound for jewelry. I swept the wedding dress from the bed and used the fabric to hide my hand. "Have you memorized the rejection oath?" I asked. "You should practice. Public speaking has never been your strength." His control cracked. Lucian warned me that until the rite ended, I belonged to him, then left with the collar still on my table. Erin waited at the far end of the hall and pretended she had not been listening. The one-eyed driver did not return by sunset. A black raven arrived instead, squeezing through the narrow opening above my window and dropping an iron ring into my teacup. The seal bore the Blackwood wolf, and four words had been engraved inside the band: Three terms. Face to face. I slept for less than two hours that night. I used the rest of the time to hide the medicine vial at my waist, memorize the old pairing law, and prepare copies of the execution order. At dawn, I handed one copy to the groundskeeper with instructions to deliver it to the visiting pack representatives if I disappeared. The pairing ceremony took place on the moon dais in front of Gray Ridge Manor. Six allied packs sent witnesses, filling the tiered stands with unfamiliar uniforms and competing scents. A light rain slicked the stones and darkened the long ceremonial carpet beneath my shoes. Father escorted me with his fingers locked painfully around mine. He thought I might run, but I needed to reach the moonstone in front of every witness. Mother stood near the altar, positioned perfectly to guide Erin forward once Lucian rejected me. Erin wore a maid-of-honor cloak over her dress. The cloak shifted when she turned, showing the silver gleam of a bridal skirt underneath. She caught me looking and smiled with the gentle pity she had practiced for years. The priest announced my name. Lucian stepped to the moonstone but did not offer me his hand. Instead, he faced the elders and declared that the Moon had made a mistake, because Gray Ridge could not place a wolfless woman beside its Alpha. Whispers spread through the stands. Father produced a convincing expression of shock. Mother reached back and found Erin's wrist, ready to pull her onto the dais the moment I begged Lucian to reconsider. "I, Lucian Gray, heir to Gray Ridge and future Alpha, hereby—" His voice carried across the crowded stands. "Wait." I slipped my hand from Father's grip, passed Lucian, and pressed my palm against the moonstone. My nail cut the skin at the base of my thumb, and blood awakened the old symbols beneath the polished surface. According to the first pairing law, the person who spoke first controlled the order of refusal. I gave my full name. Then I renounced House Vale's surname, dowry, and protection before the six packs. "I, Selene, reject my marriage contract with Lucian Gray. I also reject the title of Luna of Gray Ridge." Lucian lunged for me. Silver light rose between us and threw him back, because an unmarked bride who voluntarily abandoned her family rights could petition an unmarried Alpha from another pack. The rule had been written to settle ancient wartime alliances. Gray Ridge had simply never imagined an Omega would dare to use it. Father shouted that I was insane and reached for my hair. I put on the iron ring, raised my bloodied hand, and spoke Ronan Blackwood's name toward the northern gallery. The manor gates crashed open before my father could touch me. Black-armored riders entered in two disciplined lines. The man at their head dismounted without waiting for a servant, rain running through his black hair and down the severe planes of his face. His shoulders filled the travel cloak, and his golden wolf eyes moved once across Lucian, Father, and the elders before settling on the blood in my palm. His scent reached me across the dais: storm-soaked cedar, cold iron, and something wild enough to wake every nerve beneath my skin. The creature sleeping inside me opened her eyes. One word struck through my mind with the force of a bell. Mate. Ronan stopped below the dais and held out his hand. He did not seize me when I stared, and he did not use an Alpha command to force a response. He simply waited until I chose to step down and place my hand in his. Only then did his fingers close around mine. "I accept your proposed marriage," he said, a growl beneath the words that only a fated mate could fully hear. "Now let us discuss your terms."
