Chapter Four: Anne After sleeping three hours and gobbling a breakfast at a nearby restaurant, Ranglen arrived at Anne Montgomery’s office before it opened. She herself let him in. Her office overlooked clouds and a valley. The building caught the vapors that drifted from the inner to outer rim of Annulus. The room’s wall could be left transparent or opened for the mists to trail into the room. Ranglen claimed she wanted to be a cloud, equally serene, freed of all things two-dimensional, flat. “You should have been a bird,” he once told her. “I should have been an angel,” she replied. He didn’t know how to read that comment. Anne’s exotic black hair, like a cloud, sat full and coiled on her shoulders. She wore a conservative black business suit that showed off her “darker” attributes,
