Chapter 12: Bloodlines In The Shadows

1090 Words
The pendant felt heavier than it should have. Addie sat alone in her hotel room, staring at the silver serpent resting in her palm. For years, she had carried it without knowing why. Now, everything was changing. The photograph. The date. The Serpent. Her missing memories. None of it was a coincidence. A knock sounded at the door. Addie immediately stood. No one knew she was here. She moved silently toward the door. “Who is it?” Silence. Her hand tightened around the pendant. Another knock. Three times. Slow. Deliberate. Addie opened the door. No one was there. Only a black envelope lay on the floor. She picked it up. Inside was a single card. THE HOUSE OF VEIL. Below it was an address. Addie's expression hardened. She knew that name. Everyone in the assassin world did. The House of Veil wasn't an ordinary organization. It was a hidden network. A place where assassins were trained, recruited, and sent into the world's most dangerous shadows. And according to the stories— Her mother had once belonged to it. THE HOUSE OF VEIL The building looked abandoned from the outside. But Addie knew better. She stepped inside. The doors closed behind her. A woman stood at the end of the hallway. Older. Elegant. A scar ran across one eyebrow. Addie recognized her immediately. Madame Celeste. One of the oldest surviving figures in the assassin world. “You came.” Addie didn't lower her guard. “You sent the invitation.” Celeste looked at the pendant around Addie's neck. “I wondered when you would finally find your way back.” Addie's eyes narrowed. “Back?” “To where you belong.” “I belong nowhere.” Celeste smiled faintly. “Your mother used to say the same thing.” The room went silent. Addie's expression changed. “You knew my mother?” “I trained beside her.” “Who was she?” Celeste studied her for a long moment. “Her name was Elena Russo.” Addie froze. Russo. The name echoed through her mind. Vincenzo Russo. The man at the gala. “No.” Celeste slowly nodded. “Yes.” Addie stepped backward. “You're lying.” “I wish I were.” Celeste walked toward an old wooden cabinet and removed a photograph. She placed it on the table. Addie looked down. A woman stood in the center. Young. Sharp-eyed. Dressed in black. Beside her were two children. A boy. And a little girl. Addie's breath caught. The little girl wore a familiar silver pendant. Her fingers tightened around her own. “Who is the boy?” Celeste looked directly into her eyes. “Vincenzo Russo.” Silence. Addie shook her head. “No.” “You and Vincenzo share the same mother.” “No.” “You were separated after her death.” Addie's thoughts began racing. Broken memories flashed through her mind. Rain. A woman's voice. Someone pulling her away. A boy shouting. She pressed her fingers against the table. “What happened to her?” Celeste's expression darkened. “Elena was one of the finest assassins the House of Veil ever produced.” Addie slowly looked up. “My mother was an assassin?” “Yes.” “Then why did no one tell me?” “Because after Elena died, everything changed.” Celeste looked toward the photograph. “Your mother had enemies. Powerful ones.” “Who?” “The Serpent.” Addie's blood ran cold. “The Serpent killed her?” “We don't know.” “Don't know?” “Elena disappeared during an assignment. Her body was never recovered.” Addie stared at the photograph. “And Vincenzo?” “He was taken by your mother's family.” “And me?” Celeste's expression softened. “You disappeared.” Addie's eyes narrowed. “What do you mean?” “Someone took you before the House of Veil could find you.” A memory suddenly crashed into her mind. A woman's voice. Run, Addie. A hand pushing something into her palm. The pendant. Then darkness. Addie stumbled back. Celeste moved forward. “Addie—” “Don't.” Her voice was cold. For years, she had believed she was alone. That her past didn't matter. That there was nothing waiting behind her. But now— She had a mother. An assassin. A missing past. And a brother she had unknowingly been investigating. ACROSS THE CITY Vincenzo Russo stood inside his private office. A man entered. “We found her.” Vincenzo looked up. “Where?” “The House of Veil.” Silence. His expression changed. “So she knows.” “Should we bring her in?” Vincenzo walked toward the window. “No.” The man frowned. “Sir?” “Not yet.” Vincenzo opened a drawer. Inside was another photograph. Two children. A young boy holding the hand of a little girl. His fingers brushed over the girl's face. “I've waited too long.” His voice was almost a whisper. “For my sister to come back to me.” THE HOUSE OF VEIL Addie stood alone in the training hall. Weapons were locked behind glass. Old photographs covered the walls. Names of legendary assassins had been carved into black stone. And there— Near the center— Was one name. ELENA RUSSO. THE SILENT VEIL. Addie stared at it. Her mother hadn't just been an assassin. She had been one of the most respected assassins in their world. Celeste approached from behind. “Your mother was extraordinary.” Addie didn't turn. “I don't know her.” “No.” Celeste's voice was quiet. “But you are more like her than you realize.” Addie finally looked at her. “What happened after she disappeared?” Celeste hesitated. “Vincenzo spent years looking for you.” Addie's expression hardened. “And yet he never found me.” “He thought you were dead.” Silence. “Until now.” Her phone suddenly vibrated. An unknown message. Addie opened it. A single sentence appeared. WELCOME HOME, LITTLE SISTER. Her breathing stopped. Slowly, she looked toward the dark windows. Somewhere out there— Vincenzo was watching. And suddenly, Addie understood something terrifying. The man she had been sent to investigate— Wasn't just connected to her past. He was her past. Her brother. Her only remaining family. And Addie had no idea whether Vincenzo Russo wanted to protect her— Or use her
