I remembered the day that we had to leave school early—me and my five friends, that is. Because everyone else was dead, dying, or being turned into a zombie. There were rumors about a potential virus for months now, and everyone was just ignoring the rumor because most of the rumors aren’t true. There was an announcement on the loudspeaker telling everyone that we needed to stay in the classroom and sit quietly till further notice on a “normal” Friday, as if it were a lock-out drill. Our class was confused and freaking out like every other drill. There was someone’s head down in the back of the classroom, and I couldn’t tell who it was. (At first, that is.) I went over to the kid who had the hoodie on, and it was a kid named Julian in our class. And the second I took off his hoodie, I saw that his face was discolored and he was getting cold. Though at the time that was the least of my worries, as I turned around, I saw Julian’s best friend, Robert, discolored and moaning. All of my classmates were frozen in shock. To me, it looked as if Robert had gotten the virus from Julian. Me and my five friends made a quick plan as we ran out of school.
“OK, so we need a plan right now. What are we going to do?” My friend Samuel said.
" I’m not a hundred percent sure, but we really need to get to one of our houses right now.” I said.
“Yeah, we need shelter and weapons to be able to defend ourselves!” Josh replied.
"So who's going with me? Because I’m going home.” Wolf asked.
We started to get on our bikes in complete and total silence. It was a few seconds before anyone said anything. I now realize that we probably should have moved faster and with more urgency.
“I think Samuel should go to my house with me. You, Inisha, Josh, and Armonte can be at your house.” Our friend Mo said as we split into our groups to the houses we all agreed upon. I was hoping that everyone survived along the way.
30 minutes into biking to Wolf’s house, we encounter a group of zombies, and she tells us that we have to take a shortcut to get to her house. I thought I’d heard more zombies coming down the path.
“ Guys.. I think there are more zombies behind us. We should move fast since we aren’t equipped with any weapons.” As I said this to the group, I noticed Marie biking down the street.
“Wolf?”
“There’s a corner store along the way to my house. If there aren't too many zombies on the way, we can stop by and grab some snacks and see if they have any supplies that we can use.” Marie said.
“HELL YEAH!” Josh and Armonte said in unison.
"Oh, I'm going to have SO MUCH FUN killing zombies!” Josh yells out.
“ But with what equipment?” I pointed out.
“ SHUT UP .” Josh yelled out at me.
We all went to the corner store, which has the most instant food, snacks, canned goods, and a few drinks. We grabbed all the different kinds of food that we could fit into our backpacks and in our hands. I had grabbed instant noodles and five different types of canned food. On the other hand, Wolf had only grabbed a few bags of chips,a bunch of candy, some drinks, and other things that could help us start fires and clean wounds and things of that nature.
“What are you doing?? We aren’t having bagged chips and candy for food.” I said.
“If you’ve got a problem with what I’ve got, you can grab healthier options. Plus, no one is making you eat what I grab!” Wolf snapped back with an attitude.
While we argued, Josh in the background was grabbing some cans of food and yelling at them.
“What the f**k are you two arguing about!?”
“This child over here is fussing over what the hell we are eating in the middle of the f*****g apocalypse. It’s not like we are going to be healthy.” Wolf said nastily.
“ HEY! I was just trying to help! I won’t let y’all get cancer or die from the poisonous chemicals they put in those bagged foods.” I mentioned.
“ I don’t give a f**k about dying from shitty food.as long as it keeps us fed.” Josh said.
“ Hey, where’d Armonte go? I forgot about him.” Wolf asked.
“ Crap. I dunno. It’s Armonte though; he’s just gonna randomly pop up and scare the s**t outta me.” I said.
Me, Marie, and Josh went to look for Armonte, abandoning all of our food on the floor except for Josh who just stuffed it in his pocket.
“ Inisha, What’s up?” Armonte said, right behind me.
“Damn, you scared the crap out of me, Armonte!”
“Ay, it’s alright.” Armonte responded in a sarcastic tone.
