The next day, I was summoned to the king's chambers once again. This time, I was prepared. I had spent the morning rehearsing my words, practicing my demure smile, and perfecting my subservient demeanor.
As I entered the king's chambers, I saw that he was seated at his desk, surrounded by papers and quills. He looked up as I approached, his eyes narrowing slightly as he took in my appearance.
"Good morning, Aria," he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "I trust you're feeling...compliant after our little chat last night?"
I kept my expression neutral, refusing to rise to the bait. "Yes, Your Majesty," I said, my voice sweet and submissive. "I'm feeling...enlightened."
Kael raised an eyebrow, clearly not expecting my response. For a moment, I thought I saw a glimmer of amusement in his eyes, but it was quickly extinguished.
"Good," he said, his voice cold and detached. "I've decided to grant you a small measure of freedom. You'll be attending the royal hunt with me today."
My heart skipped a beat as I processed his words. A royal hunt? That sounded like the perfect opportunity to escape, or at least gather more information about the kingdom.
"Thank you, Your Majesty," I said, trying to keep my enthusiasm in check. "I won't disappoint you."
Kael's eyes seemed to bore into mine, as if searching for any sign of deception. But I kept my mask firmly in place, smiling demurely as he rose from his seat.
"Let's go," he said, his voice curt. "We don't want to keep the others waiting."
As we rode out to the hunt, the wind in my hair and the sun on my face, I felt a thrill of excitement. For the first time since arriving at the palace, I felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, I could use this opportunity to gain more freedom, to find a way to escape, and to rescue my sister.
But as I glanced over at Kael, riding beside me with a calculating gaze, I knew that I couldn't let my guard down. Not for a moment. The game was on, and I was ready to play.
As we rode through the forest, the trees grew closer together, casting dappled shadows on the ground. The hunt was in full swing, with the sound of hounds baying and horses thundering through the underbrush. Kael rode at the head of the group, his eyes scanning the horizon for any sign of prey.
I rode beside him, my senses on high alert. I had no intention of participating in the hunt, but I was determined to use this opportunity to gather information and possibly escape.
As we rode, Kael pointed out various landmarks and features of the forest, explaining the history and mythology behind them. I listened intently, trying to absorb as much information as possible.
But as the day wore on, I began to feel a sense of restlessness. I was getting tired of playing the role of the obedient subject, tired of being cooped up in the palace. I longed for freedom, for the ability to make my own choices and decisions.
As we stopped to rest the horses, Kael turned to me, his eyes gleaming with amusement. "You're not very good at this, are you?" he said, his voice low and teasing. "You're not cut out for the life of a courtier."
I felt a surge of anger at his words, but I kept my temper in check. "Perhaps, Your Majesty," I said, my voice sweet and demure. "But I'm trying my best to adapt."
Kael's eyes seemed to bore into mine, as if searching for any sign of defiance. But I kept my mask firmly in place, smiling up at him with a look of innocence.
Just then, a loud crash echoed through the forest, followed by the sound of hounds baying. "The hunt is on," Kael said, his voice rising with excitement. "Let's go."
Without waiting for me, he spurred his horse into a gallop, racing off towards the sound of the hunt. I hesitated for a moment, then followed after him, my heart pounding in my chest.
As we rode, the trees grew closer together, the branches whipping past my face. I felt a rush of exhilaration, the wind in my hair and the sun on my face. For a moment, I forgot about my situation, forgot about the palace and the king and the role I was playing. I was free, unencumbered by the weights that normally held me down.
But as we burst into a clearing, I saw that we were surrounded by a group of rough-looking men, their faces twisted with cruel grins. Kael was nowhere to be seen, but I knew he must be close.
"Well, well, well," one of the men said, his voice dripping with malice. "What do we have here?"
I felt a shiver run down my spine as I realized I was in trouble. But I refused to back down, refused to show fear. Instead, I smiled, my eyes flashing with defiance.
"I think I'm about to find out," I said, my voice steady and strong.
The men closed in around me, their eyes leering and hungry. I knew I had to think fast if I wanted to get out of this situation alive. I glanced around, looking for any opportunity to escape, but the men were too well-positioned.
Just as they were about to grab me, a loud whistle pierced the air, and the men froze. "Leave her alone," Kael's voice rang out, his tone cold and commanding.
The men backed off, their faces pale and submissive. Kael rode into the clearing, his eyes flashing with anger. "What did I tell you?" he demanded, his voice low and menacing. "You are not to touch her. She's under my protection."
The men nodded, their faces downcast. "Sorry, Your Majesty," one of them muttered. "We didn't know."
Kael's gaze flicked to me, his eyes narrowing. "Get on my horse," he said, his voice curt. "We're leaving."
I hesitated for a moment, unsure of what to do. But something in Kael's expression made me realize that I was safer with him than with these men. I nodded, and Kael pulled me up onto the horse in front of him.
We rode away from the clearing "You should be more careful," he whispered in my ear. "These men are not to be trifled with."
I felt a shiver run down my spine at his words, but I refused to show fear. "I can take care of myself," I said, trying to sound confident.
Kael's laughter was low and husky. "We'll see about that," he said, his breath warm against my ear.
As I thought about what happened,I cliche to him pressing my body with his and wrapping my hands around his waist.
"you're scared"he giggles. I immediately realize why he asked,I remove my hand from his waist."No" I said boldly.
The horse galloped and I was nearly thrown out of it, without thinking twice I grabbed his waist with both hand leaning on him."you should" he muttered with is laughter echoing in my ears.
I felt a surge of unease as I realized that I was trapped between the devil and the deep blue sea. Kael might have saved me from those men, but what did he want in return?
