Betty followed her grandfather into the woods, the air cool and damp in the thick canopy of trees. They spent hours by the quiet river. The bucket beside them was half full already, fish wriggling against the metal. Betty’s smile widened each time she caught another one. It was exciting for her. She’d never caught more than one before, but today she’d managed a few. “You did well,” her grandfather said, his tone proud but gentle. “You can come here to fish during the day if you like, but don’t wander deep into the woods.
