Dinner was a quiet affair, the kind of silence that felt heavy. Every small sound, the click of a fork against a plate seemed amplified. Grayson barely touched his food. He sat back, his gaze fixed on Betty with an intensity that made her skin prickle. She kept her head down, focusing on a piece of roasted potato, but she could feel him watching her. When she finally looked up, he didn't look away. “Why are you looking at me like that?” she asked. She tried to keep her voice level, but there was a slight tremor she couldn’t quite hide.
