A CHILD'S REFLECTION

1061 Words
Elena Do children know when their lives are about to change forever? Do they sense it in the air, in the heat between the adults around them? That’s what I wondered as I stood in the doorway of Liam’s room, watching him play with his toy cars. His tiny hands lay them across the floor, his lips making the soft “v” room sounds he loved. He didn’t know what was happening. He didn’t know the man in the living room was the one who turned my world upside down before he was even born. “Mommy?” Liam’s soft voice pulled me from my thoughts. “Yes, sweetheart?” “Who’s the man in the nice shoes?” My stomach twisted. How do you explain to a three-year-old that the man in the nice shoes is his father, a father he’s never known? “He’s... an old friend,” I said carefully. Liam frowned, his little face scrunching up. “He looked at me funny.” My heart skipped a beat. “What do you mean?” “I dunno. Like he was sad and happy at the same time.” Children notice everything. They don’t always understand, but they notice. “Don’t worry about him,” I said, brushing his hair back. “Let’s finish your cars, okay?” He nodded, but his eyes lingered on me, curious and searching. When I walked back into the living room, Sebastian was still standing there, hands in his pockets, looking like he didn’t know whether to stay or run. For a man who was filled with confidence at the gala years ago, he looked... unsure. “You need to leave,” I said firmly. “Elena” “No. You don’t get to walk in here after three years and act like you have a place in our lives.” “Our lives?” he echoed, his eyes narrowing. “So it’s true. He’s mine.” The way he said it, very raw, quiet, and full of disbelief, made my throat tighten. “What does it matter?” I snapped. “You left. You made your choice.” “I didn’t know, Elena!” His voice rose, the calm exterior cracking. “You didn’t tell me.” “Because you were gone!” We stood there, staring at each other, the weight of unspoken words pressing down on us. “Tell me about him,” Sebastian said suddenly, his voice softer now. “Please.” I refused. I didn’t owe him anything. But at the same time, I knew Liam deserved answers. “His name is Liam,” I said. “He’s three. He loves dinosaurs, cars, and peanut butter sandwiches. He’s smart, kind, and the best thing that’s ever happened to me.” Sebastian’s jaw tightened, and for a moment, I thought he might cry. “Does he know?” he asked. “No,” I said quickly. “And I don’t want him to, not yet.” “Why not?” “Because I don’t trust you, Sebastian. You left once. How do I know you won’t do it again?” He stood speechless like I had earlier slapped him. “I didn’t leave you, Elena. I thought I was doing what was best for you. I didn’t think I was good enough” “That’s a wicked excuse,” I interrupted. “You don’t get to decide what’s best for me. You don’t get to make that call and then come back when it’s convenient for you.” He ran a hand through his hair, frustration filled his face. “I want to fix this. I want to be there for him. For you.” I laughed bitterly. “You think you can just walk back in and play dad? It doesn’t work like that.” “I’m not giving up,” he said, his voice steady now. “I’ll prove to you that I’m serious. That I’m not going anywhere.” Before I could respond, Liam’s small voice called out from behind me. “Mommy?” I turned to see him standing in the hallway, clutching his favorite stuffed dinosaur. His wide, curious eyes flicked between me and Sebastian. “Who’s he?” Liam asked, his voice filled with innocent curiosity. I froze. Sebastian crouched down, meeting Liam’s eye level. “Hey, buddy. I’m Sebastian.” Liam tilted his head, studying him. “You’re the man with the nice shoes.” Sebastian smiled, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “I guess I am.” Liam looked at me, his little brow furrowed. “Is he staying?” The question hung in the air, heavy and loaded. “No,” I said quickly. “He was just leaving.” Sebastian straightened, his eyes meeting mine. “For now,” he said softly. “But I’ll be back.” After he left, I sat on the couch, my head in my hands. My mind was racing, my emotions was in a tangled mess. How was I supposed to handle this? How was I supposed to protect Liam from the storm Sebastian had brought into our lives? A knock at the door jolted me from my thoughts. I opened it, expecting to see Sebastian again, but instead, there was a package on the ground. No name, no return address. I picked it up, my heart pounding as I carried it inside. When I opened it, I found a single photograph inside. It was of me and Sebastian, from the night of the gala. We were dancing, laughing, completely lost in each other. But it wasn’t just the photo that sent chills down my spine. Scrawled across the bottom in bold, red ink were the words: Some secrets never stay buried and forgotten I stared at the photo, my hands trembling. Who had sent this? Why now? The phone rang, making me jump. I grabbed it, my voice shaky as I answered. “Hello?” A deep, unfamiliar voice came through the line. “Did you really think you could keep the past hidden, Elena?” My blood ran cold. “Who is this?” The line went dead. I sat there, the photo still in my hand, my heart pounding in my chest. This wasn’t just about Sebastian. Someone else knew. And they were coming for me.
