18 Alien Space Walk Nah-nah-nah, brah Just kidding. “Zader,” Jay called, “This is the last wave. I’ll meet you by the showers.” Standing near Pohaku at Piko Point, I watched Jay paddle to the sweet spot and coast into shore. The sun was still high with hours of daylight left, but we both had homework, and it was a school night. Mom would be home soon, and while she knew we were at the beach, she didn’t know Jay was surfing at Nalupuki. We wanted to keep it that way. I adjusted the dive helmet and scrunched my toes in the waders, getting ready for the long hike to the pavilion. I looked up to judge the distance and froze. Coming across the lava, barefoot and in no hurry, was Kalei. I looked around. No place to go, no place to hide. Maybe if I head toward Keikikai, he won’t see me.
