When we entered Lauele Surf Designs, an old haole guy with a long scraggly blond ponytail and black pearl earring looked up from the counter where he was sorting receipts.
“Eh, Nili!” he said. “What’s up?”
“Howzit!”
They grabbed hands surfer-style and bumped chests across the counter.
“Rad,” said Nili-boy, “this is my cousin, Zader.”
“Howzit!”
He wrapped his rough hand around mine and gave it a shake.
“So you’re Jay Westin’s brother?”
I nodded.
“I watched him at the October Menehune Surf Meet at Sunset. Under fifteen, yeah?”
I nodded again.
“He’s good, really good. If he keeps it up, he can go pro.” He tagged Nili-boy on the arm. “Probably do better than this guy.”
“He has to get back in the water first,” I said.
