A Note About Language
Aloha!
The Niuhi Shark Saga takes place in an imaginary location on Oahu, Hawai‘i, called Lauele. Like most islanders, the characters use common Hawaiian and Pidgin English words and phrases when speaking from the heart. Most of the time, it’s easy to understand plenny small kine fish means plenty of small kinds of fish.
However, some words like hanai (adopted) or ‘ohana (family) are harder to figure out. Whenever you’re unsure, head to the glossary. There’s also an online Hawaiian Pidgin English dictionary, free reader’s guide, and more activities on h***:://www.niuhisharksaga.com/.
I hope Zader’s adventures in One Boy, No Water; One Shark, No Swim; and One Truth, No Lie give you a little taste of island living. Drop me a line and tell me what you thought. I love to hear from readers.
A hui hou,
