Chapter seven

Kelso and Benitez watched as Lau paced back and forth nervously. “ What the f**k happened to her Kelso!” she yelled. Kelso shrugged. “ Cross is a ghost agent Lau, she can disappear for weeks or months at a time. One day she’ll just be gone and then some time later, our enemies are dead and she comes back covered in blood.” Kelso said with a shrug. She wasn’t worried about Dani. She was a good agent and her intuition was spot on. She wasn’t called the Reaper for nothing. She would get the job done. She would cut the head right off the snake. Lau’s behavior though was bugging Kelso. She was acting almost paranoid. Was she afraid that Cross would find out something she wasn’t supposed to? Kelso pulled Benitez away from Lau and together they pulled Rhodes into his office. “ Any news on Agent Cross?” Rhodes asked and Kelso shook her head. “ No but that isn’t uncommon, Cross is a ghost but she is like a shark in bloody water, she’ll get the job done.” Kelso told him. She rubbed a hand across her face and rubbed her temples. She felt a headache coming on. “ There is something bothering me though. Lau is acting really weird. Have you noticed anything going on with her?” she asked. Rhodes thought for a minute and then nodded. “ Yeah she has been acting differently since her sister was killed. Lau couldn’t save her.” he said and Kelso sighed. “ I’m going to have to keep an eye on her. I think she’s worried that Cross is going to find out something, Lau doesn’t want her to.” Kelso said and both men groaned. It had been weeks since Dani joined Kajika. She kept herself busy training Nate and eventually others who wanted to learn how to survive. She also kept herself busy because she was trying to avoid Keener. There was some serious chemistry between the two of them. During one sparring session, Keener had pinned Dani to the mat, his lower body against hers and she’d gotten aroused. She avoided him ever since. Dani sighed as the hot water ran down her body. She leaned her head against the shower wall and watched the water go down the drain. So many memories raced through her mind. The worst one was when she was watching her own blood go down the drain. Dani had just turned 14 and one of the counselors at the orphanage had cornered her in the girls shower late one night. He’d been watching her for some time. That night the counselor had beaten and r***d her. Javier had found her a few hours later when one of the other kids had told him there was crying coming from the girl’s shower. After getting dressed, she and Javier had confronted the counselor; he ended up dead and the next morning she had joined the Division and Kajika then 18 joined the army.  Dani spent the next five years training in every martial art she could. She trained with guns and knives. She turned her body into a deadly weapon. Tears gathered in her eyes but in an effort to keep them from falling, Dani thought about the files she’d read in Haven stating that Kajika, Dragov, Keener, Parnell and Conley had turned rogue. Everything she’d seen with her own eyes proved otherwise. At least where Kajika and Keener were concerned. She had yet to meet Parnell, Dragov or Conley. Kelso and another agent already found that President Ellis was a traitor. He’d hired Black Tusk to take out the Division and had the agent killed. What was Ellis’s endgame? She thought to herself because now Black Tusk was after Keener and her brother. Dani thought about the fact that she and Javier were side by side again and all the pain from the past rushed back in. She had been so lost and alone these last three years, a shell of who she used to be. Having him back in her life was like raising from the dead and she choked back a sob, all the tears she’d been holding at bay, finally flowed free.
