“I’ve heard when the Omega stage 1 heat happens, it sends the dominant into a rut, its biology against what you want. You’ve already started an internal war between yourself and the dominant you choose”. Gage stopped eating and looked directly at me. I couldn’t help it. I blushed again! At school, I don’t even blush when a boy talks to me, but now I can’t stop doing it in front of those two. Do I like age gaps in relationships? Is this a new facet of my personality that I didn’t know about? I don’t want to look for a daddy figure in a boyfriend, that’s just on the freaky side. Gage was still looking at me as if I had grown another head after I shook myself all over. I don’t blame him.
“That’s true, I’ve been trying to get some literature on omegas and my heats and wow… it’s pretty sparse on the knowledge front.” I tried to be conversational towards him and smiled a little.
“We could all research together if you like? We have the university library, so we could get you in there?” Chase piped up and grinned at me.
“That would be great, thank you so much. Luelle will have a fit if she doesn’t come, though. By the way, her partner will be coming soon to visit. Has she told you?” I latched onto a topic that seemed a little more safe and settled into the familiarity that Chase and I had.
“Ah, really not something I want to think about, she’s still my baby sister to me” Chase looked a little pale, and I did feel a bit sorry for him.
“We all grow up in the end. You still call me kiddo, if we do end up as partners, you will be accused of being the Daddy in the relationship.” Now why did I go and say that? What is wrong with me?
“Pffft, she totally went there! She got you good dude ha ha” Gage gripped the countertop and chuckled deeply. Hmm, he has a nice laugh. I smiled at him as he pointed at Chase.
“Shut up, asshole!” Chase gave him the middle finger, and I laughed at that. The tension dropped out of the air and Chase gave me that easy smile that I usually know. He used the stool to stand on the bottom bar support and leaned across to me. I looked at him perplexingly and his hand grabbed the escaping tendril from my hair knot and put it behind my ear.
“It’s OK, Eleanor, I won’t call you kiddo, besides you don’t look like a kid or act like one either” He sat back and scraped the bowl and ate the rest of his food. My blush was now at tomato status and I could feel it burning. What the f**k was that? Wasn’t I just thinking the other week how I was disillusioned by the whole flirting thing and how the inevitability of breakups depressed me?
“I have to ask, don’t you have a school crush or someone you would be interested in?” Gage was very still as Chase had sat back and was watching him like something akin to prey. He was acting more of a dominant Alpha now. I could see it.
“I did..like someone, but…” I shrugged my shoulders.
“Do you want to take this year to solve that? I don’t think the pairing should interfere with your school experiences, including your first crush.” I wasn’t expecting that. Gage was surprisingly more modern than I thought. Most Alphas are possessive and misogynistic. Well, that’s what I heard. But still, it’s not something I need to make a priority of in my life.
“Oh, no.. he doesn’t even know I exist. It’s like an admiration thing from afar. I never expected anything else from him. He’s just been tested and come out as Beta stage 1. I don’t know much else about him except that he’s kind to others.”
“I bet my sister won’t let you near him” Chase gulped down his drink and smacked his lips loudly. I smacked his arm in habit. When he rushed his drinks, I always did that at his home.
“She doesn’t let me near any boys, Chase, she’s like a protective old mother hen”. I took their dishes. busying myself so my blushing could calm down. These two were really throwing me through a loop with my hormones.
“You must bring out her maternal side.”
“And you must bring out her violent side” I quipped back, and I glanced at Gage as he kept looking at Chase. I noticed his eyes were an ice blue and were tinged with a yellow rim. Yellow was an Alpha thing, wasn’t it? And sharp canines? I sat back at the breakfast counter now that my face had gone down to a respectable pink shade.
“Ah ha touch touchè” Chase leaned across quickly and flicked my brow. I laughed and shoved him away playfully. We really were comfortable together and it would make sense to fall in love with someone who you know. I hated that our choices were being taken out of our hands.
“Do you want to carry on with your education then, Eleanor?” Gage had crossed his arms and I couldn’t help but think his whole demeanor was slightly defensive. Maybe having two Alpha Dominants in the same room as me is not exactly a good idea.
“Yeah… I was thinking of Science, possibly biochemistry and genealogy. I really want to make a difference to Omegas, so I’d love to be part of a team that invents suppressants to help, especially stage 1s. What are you guys doing?” I smiled at him again to show it’s OK to relax here, but his body language remained the same.
“Changing my education major to an apprenticeship. Hopefully, I like to make things, so pottery for now. It’s a two-year course usually, the Dean is sorting it” His defensive posture tightened as if I was going to think any less of him. This was an Alpha Dominant who was insisting I have my schoolgirl crush and was respectful of my choices, and now he’s going to study something that’s not usual for an Alpha. Right now, this man was surprising me in a very good way. He’s so modern and refreshing! I loved it.
“Woooah, I didn’t even know that! That is such a change from business and economics!” Chase reeled back and nearly fell off his stool and his features shaped in shock.
“Told you, lots has happened today” Gage shrugged his shoulders and I couldn’t get over how big he was. Did he work out? Chase was big too, but more in a lithe, athletic way.
“I think that’s beautiful.” I put my hand gently on his arm that was folded into his other and pulled back instantly, not wanting to make him uncomfortable. I’m so used to being tactile with Luelle and her family that I forgot that they could misconstrue my Omega traits as something else.
“You do?” His whole focus was on me and the yellow in his eyes was bleeding into the ice blue. It was like a cacophony of opposite colours and it was fascinating.
“Yes, I’m useless at anything like that. I always admire anyone that can create. It must be amazing to hold that talent in your hands”. He relaxed at my answer and finally unfolded his arms. His face that was strained now looked healthier as he smiled at me. I felt a pain stab me in my stomach and I reached for it, automatically soothing myself.
“OK, enough about him bragging. I’m studying psychology and law. I like the psychology bit. The law is boring as f**k”. Chase’s tone did not match his words. His voice was deeper and held a tinge of darkness that I'd never heard from him before. I looked straight at him and, like Gage, his light brown eyes were being invaded by yellow. Ah s**t.
“I knew what you were studying, Chase, Luelle told me, I’m proud of you.” I thought that his eyes would go back to normal with the compliment, but instead they became more yellow.
“I don’t think I like you saying that you are proud of me, chica, I want you to take an interest in what I’m doing” he said, while showing the lengthening of his canines.
The tingles of foreboding lifted the hairs on my body like static. Chica? What kind of name was that? “I do take an interest in Chase. Can you tell me when we will get together another time? I have got a load of studying to do tonight”
I heard a growl and looked towards Gage. His eyes were not as bad as Chase’s, but the tension in his body was absolute as he glared at Chase.
“I think going is a good idea, Chase”, Gage gritted his canines and stood up and grabbed Chase.
The next few seconds completely flew by and my head was spinning because of what happened.
Chase opened his mouth and went to bite Gage’s arm. Gage grabbed the back of Chase’s neck and used his knee to put him to the floor with his body as a weight on top of him to pin him.
“Are you done? Or do you want to scare her enough that she won’t go out with you?”
I didn’t say anything throughout all of this, as I was still frozen in shock. When I have the flight or fight response it looks like I just freeze up.
“Yeah”, Chase tapped the floor as if this was a wrestling match and Gage let him get up slowly.
He turned to me and crossed his arms again in that defensive posture. “I’m sorry about that. Our dominant genes make us possessive, I think, but I will stick around till you make a choice and help him out.”
His posture gave me a pang as I had just got him to relax. “Why aren’t you possessive?” Now why did I go and say something so stupid as that? Did Omega traits make me lose brain cells or something?
Gage glared at me as if this was all my fault and I was tempted to say something else. There was something attractive about his face being in a temper. Not that I like men with bad tempers, not that I know any men with bad tempers either, but the more he glared at me, the more I wanted to rile him up. What the hell was I thinking? Did I have a death wish? I tried to calm the thudding of my heartbeat and chanted to myself internally that this was just the Omega hormones reacting to the situation of being in close proximity to two dominant Alphas. If I was on my own right now, I think I would have screamed.
“Who says I’m not possessive?” With that, he turned to Chase, who was looking at me with that same dark look, and pushed him out the door.
