The Ruler

Aubrietta walked into the department with a stride that didn’t falter. She had never thought her soon to be ex-boyfriend would cheat on her when she had a smart home setup. Cameras recording around the clock at her house, smart lights, speakers, tv and much more. Tech was her thing she was good at it. She saw the skinny porcelain blonde walk through the front door thirty minutes ago. As she passed the threshold quietly, she heard the sounds of them in the bedroom. She had a lot of money since she helped create a home automation company, when smart homes had started to grow in popularity. She owned the house and everything in it. He had over stayed his welcome. “Where is she?” Kai had grumbled, “who Aubs? Oh she is at work tends to stay for hours.” She didn’t have work today. Obviously he didn’t care enough to listen. She had a conference call then would be off the rest of the day. It worked out for her though, she would of never known if she hadn’t stepped in on them. Aubrietta grabbed her phone and headed to the room. The door was open. She saw them talking on the bed. They were facing away from her. She leaned against the door frame with her arms crossed. “Oh Kai! Don’t stop!” Played from the video on her phone. “Go harder!” “What the f**k?” She smiled, “that’s what I was thinking. Crazy how long I have been standing here.” He pushed the girl off, “Aubs it’s not what it looks like!” She laughed, “you must think I’m dumb. My home is a smart home. I have cameras everywhere.” The girl squirmed to grab her clothes. “Everywhere?” “Oh yeah. If he wasn’t too stupid to understand my job, he probably would of noticed. It’s not hard to look at the feed.” “s**t, I normally turn off the router.” He ran a hand through his hair. “I’m giving you ten minutes, grab your stuff and get out. I’ve already changed all the lock codes and WiFi password.” He looked up with a smirk, “this is my place too!” “You make me laugh. Not only is your name on nothing. I own your car too! You also have been cut off from all my accounts and I made sure to grab my money and cards out of your wallet sitting on the fireplace. Leave now or I’ll sue you for the money you have used of mine and make sure you never get a job again.” He started to pack his backpack, “all this time and this is how you treat me?” She leaned back on the door, “better be careful, you will be paying for the new mattress and sheets, I’ll be buying. I’m also not deleting your video. So don’t even try anything!” The girl was heading out the door when she called back. “I drove my car. We can go somewhere! I’m so sorry! I will never come back here. I’m sorry.” “Times up! Save your self preservation bull s**t and get out.” She walked them out the front door and slammed it shut. She had headed to the kitchen and began to make a drink. She heard the crack of magic from behind her and sighed. She only knew one tele-porter that would come in without asking. “You know you could of just used magic.” She turned to look at the intruder, “and you could just use a door.” “Oh Aubrietta, I thought we were close.” She smirked, “oh Tyrrel, I thought you knew me better than that.” He took her drink out of her hand and sat on the bar stool. They had often in the past shared residency, but with Kai around Tyrrel rarely appeared anymore. She looked at the light elf and sighed. They were the exact opposite of each other. His dark skin, black hair and dark eyes looked so rich next to her ivory skin, white hair and gray silver eyes. She was a blood elf. Most people thought them to be opposite. She was mistaken for a light elf among other species. Elves had been scattered to the wind a few hundred years ago. The elves and the fae though closely related had gone to war. It was something setup by a different species entirely. The issue now was the lack of both species. Though they still held a good chunk of population they no longer gathered. There was a prophecy that stated a Noble Leader of the Elves would come out of hiding and rule them into the modern age. She didn’t know what to think of that. “Your dad has been asking about you. Your brother has tried to get me to teleport him here.” She stirred the new drink, “I’ll try to make time. How has the search been going?” He glanced at her boots, “coming up empty. Where did you go today? Green cargo pants, black tank top, cargo boots and French braids. Searching another temple?” “Yeah, I need answers. I can’t sit back and wait anymore. We need to stop these attacks. The Epsilons we found are still after the fae’s scent. They trusted us. I need to find any other clues on this power I hold. I need to help. Mom wouldn’t have wanted this.” Fae were always considered more conniving magic users compared to elves and witches. They used runes where we used incantations and potions. Fae gathered abilities off of waves or other beings. Elves however had abilities based on birthright and practice. As a blood elf, she could turn invisible and make other things invisible, had heightened senses and much more. Light elves, like Tyrrel, could teleport, locate and had the use of flight. You could always learn certain abilities or cast spells. Magic just always came with a price. Some prices aren’t worth it. “Hey, none of that! She would of hated to see this shell of a person.” He thumbed the table, “why don’t you just take care of the Epsilon problem? You are strong enough.” “I don’t want the adverse effect. Drawing attention to myself right now isn’t a good idea.” Tyrrel looked down, “eventually they will find out your alive. They will find out the ruler is already roaming earth.”
