Chapter 4: We need to talk

912 Words
Maria's Point of View I'm at work right now, and my shift is about to end in a few minutes. I work as a cook in a not-so-popular but decently busy restaurant. After a few minutes, I took off my apron and changed my uniform. But as I was changing, I heard a loud commotion outside, especially Lenie's voice since she works with me as a waiter. I could clearly hear her loud scream from outside, so I hurriedly finished changing to see what was happening outside. As I stepped out, I almost held my breath when I saw an elegant man sitting at an empty table. His arms were folded across his chest, and his legs were crossed. It seemed like he immediately knew I was looking at him because his cold eyes directly met mine along with his chilly tone. "We need to talk." I quickly brushed past him without acknowledging his presence. I walked briskly towards the exit of the building, thinking I could finally escape. But I was wrong. The moment I stepped outside, his cold voice greeted me from behind. "Get in the car." I took a deep breath, slowly turned around, and flashed my sweetest fake smile. "I can manage to travel alone, Mister Thompson. Thanks anyway." "I told you there is something we should talk about!" he persisted. "I actually have a date with Frederick right now, but I'm not late yet so I'll have to decline your offer to drive me. And as for what you want to talk about, didn't we already discuss it last week?" I paused, pretending to ponder. "Don't tell me you forgot when you specifically said I shouldn't show my face in front of you again." I could see the anger and threat in his eyes even in the darkness of the night. I also knew he didn't want me mentioning Frederick. Frederick was one of my closest friends, and that was the reason Reina and my ex-mother-in-law framed me. They made it look like I cheated with Frederick, and my scumbag ex-husband believed it. "Miss Hills, please step into the car..." another man emerged from the vehicle. "Mister Thompson, please get in and I'll handle things here." "I have no reason to discuss anything with your boss anymore," I stated firmly. Kairo held his side head and massaged it as if getting tired of my stubbornness before getting into his Rolls Royce. Meanwhile, his assistant stood in front of me and spoke persistently, "Miss Hills, you know Mister Thompson's temper. Please, don't make things harder for yourself or you'll only make it worse when he gets angry." "How important is it that you want to talk about?" I turned back to Kairo, who was now inside the car with his window down. "It's extremely important!" I sarcastically looked at him and sneered, "How important is it that you have to come to the work of a low-class woman like me?" "Maria Lucy Hills!" he shouted firmly. I noticed the fear in his assistant's eyes as he pleaded with me. "Please, Miss Hills. Go inside the car." "No—" Before I could finish my sentence, I heard the car door open and in an instant, he was already towering over me. I couldn't read his eyes due to the darkness. "Don't make me angry! You owe me big this time!" he said sharply, tightly gripping my wrist before forcefully pulling me into his car. As we got into his car, I heard the doors lock, so I didn't even attempt to open them. He squeezed me to the side as if he didn't want to give me a chance to move. The car started and he remained silent. I had no idea where we were going, but as the atmosphere grew heavier, I broke the silence. "Are you just going to stay quiet and not say anything after dragging me here?" I turned to him and gave him a stern look. "I'm not always free, Mr. Thompson, so just tell me what you need!" "Why?" he turned to me and asked coldly. "What do you mean why?" I asked back, frowning. "Why aren't you always free?" This time, his voice was even colder and more firm. I paused for a moment, biting my tongue to prevent myself from saying something I would regret. I cleared my throat and looked him straight in the eyes. "It's already night and I still have a shift tomorrow. It's a daily routine that wealthy people like you wouldn't understand." "Stop lying!" he suddenly got angry and threw a folder onto my lap. I looked at the white folder before picking it up and opening it. My hands trembled and my heart pounded like a bell ringing. I read what was written and then threw it back at him, pretending not to know what its contents meant. "What is that?" I asked directly, trying not to show my nervousness. "Don't fool me, Lucy! This is not a joke! You've been fooling me for so long! You know this is a birth certificate!" He threw the file again and it hit the window. "I don't know what you're talking about," I stubbornly replied. "I investigated you and learned that you have two registered children. They have your surname and not their father's because, in the first place, you've never been married," he paused, panting with anger before continuing, "These are my twins, aren't they?"
