The Secret He Buried

627 Words
Three days had passed since the press conference. Three days since Damon Steele disappeared from every meeting, every camera, every board call. And three days since Arielle told him to walk away — only to realize that silence hurt more than any headline ever could. She thought distance would make her feel safe again. Instead, it made her restless. Until the email arrived. From: Anonymous Subject: You deserve to know the truth. Attachment: Hartwell_Confidential.pdf Arielle hesitated, her fingers hovering over the screen. Then she opened it. What she saw drained the color from her face. Transaction logs. Bank transfers. Signed authorizations. All leading to Steele Holdings. And every payment… connected to Evan Hartwell. Her heart raced. Damon’s company had been funding Evan’s shell firms for years — even after her downfall. “No…” she whispered. “No, he couldn’t have known.” But at the bottom of the file, one line confirmed her worst fear. Authorized by: D. Steele. By the time she reached his office, she was shaking. Security tried to stop her, but one look at her eyes — wild, broken, determined — and they let her through. Damon was there, behind his desk, looking like he hadn’t slept in days. When he saw her, he stood instantly. “Arielle—” “Don’t.” She slammed the printed papers onto the desk. “You knew.” He froze. “What is that?” “You tell me,” she spat. “Payments from your company to Evan Hartwell — after you destroyed me. After you swore you didn’t know the truth.” He glanced at the papers, his expression darkening. “This isn’t what it looks like.” “Then tell me what it is!” she shouted. “Tell me you didn’t keep working with the man who ruined me!” “I didn’t!” he roared back, slamming his hand on the desk. “That file is part of an undercover deal. I was trying to bait him — to expose who was really behind everything. You think I’d ever protect that snake after what he did to you?” Arielle’s chest heaved, anger and confusion crashing inside her. “Then why didn’t you tell me?” “Because I couldn’t risk it getting out,” he said quietly. “The fewer who knew, the safer you were.” Her voice trembled. “You don’t get to decide what’s safe for me.” He stepped closer, his tone soft but rough with emotion. “I was trying to protect you, Arielle. That’s all I’ve ever wanted.” She shook her head. “No. You wanted control. You always have.” Something inside him broke at that. His voice dropped to a whisper. “You really think I’d go through all this just to control you?” “I don’t know what to think anymore,” she whispered back. For a moment, neither spoke. Then she turned to leave, her voice cracking. “I can’t keep doing this, Damon. Every time I think I know who you are, you give me another reason to run.” He reached for her hand but stopped halfway — letting it fall back to his side. “Arielle…” he said softly. “You can run if you want. But the truth won’t stop following you.” She looked back once — just once — and saw it. The regret. The exhaustion. The love he didn’t know how to express. And it scared her more than any lie ever could. That night, Arielle sat alone in her apartment again, staring at the city lights. She wanted to believe him. She wanted to hate him. And for the first time… she didn’t know which one hurt more.
