TEMPTATION AND BETRAYAL

1023 Words
Emma walked into the office Monday morning, expecting the usual hush of efficiency, Damien’s presence looming behind tinted glass. Instead, the building buzzed like a shaken hive. Assistants whispered in corners, phones rang nonstop, and Lydia refused to meet her eyes. She approached cautiously. “What’s going on?” Lydia hesitated. “You don’t know?” “Know what?” Lydia swallowed hard. “Check your email.” Emma returned to her desk, heart pounding. The first message in her inbox was from Damien’s legal department. Subject: URGENT—Confidential Investigation Notice Her stomach flipped. She clicked it open. Miss Hartley, It has come to our attention that your name has been flagged in an ongoing internal audit involving unauthorized access to restricted financial documents. Please prepare to meet with legal and compliance at 11 a.m. She froze. What? Damien’s Office Emma stormed in without knocking—something she’d never dared before. “You set me up,” she snapped. Damien didn’t even flinch. “Close the door.” “I trusted you!” she hissed, ignoring the command. His expression darkened. “You think I did this?” “I’m being accused of leaking confidential files," Damien said. And you’re the only person who could’ve made that happen!” His voice was ice. “I protect my empire, Emma. If I thought you were a threat, I’d have destroyed you before now.” Her anger faltered. “Then why is this happening?” He looked at her long and hard, then picked up a file from his desk and tossed it toward her. “Because someone else wants you out of the way.” Emma opened it—and her heart stopped. Inside were surveillance photos. Of her. Meeting someone in a café. Hands brushing, heads tilted close. She staggered back. “That’s my ex. Jack. I haven’t seen him in months. He said he just wanted to talk. He didn’t even know about the job.” Damien’s jaw clenched. “That’s not how it looks.” “I swear I didn’t—” He crossed the room in two strides, grabbing her chin with shocking gentleness. “This game we’re playing? It only works with trust. So I’ll ask you once, did you give him anything?” “No.” His eyes searched hers like they could peel away lies. Then he released her. “I’ll handle it.” She blinked. “Just like that?” “No. Not just like that. You’re still going to face the board. You’re still going to burn for this... until we clear your name. But I’ll be beside you when you do.” Her throat tightened. “Why?” He stepped closer again, this time his voice lower, his expression unreadable. “Because if anyone’s going to break you, Emma—it’s going to be me.” Emma sat in the boardroom, surrounded by cold eyes and sharper suits. The long, polished table between her and the members of the legal team felt like a courtroom. Damien was at the head, impassive. A king presiding over a trial of his own design. “Miss Hartley,” one of the lawyers began, “you were seen meeting an individual named Jack Nolan, former data analyst at Kaine Technologies’ competitor, Halden Corp.” “I didn’t give him anything,” she said, steady but soft. “You understand why this appears suspicious.” She swallowed. “Yes.” “Do you deny that you’ve had romantic involvement with this person in the past?” Her gaze flicked to Damien before she could stop. His jaw was tight. Blank. “Yes, I knew him. A long time ago. "But this wasn’t—this meeting wasn’t what it looked like.” The board was unmoved. We’re conducting a full audit of your communications and device activity. In the meantime, you’re on probation.” Emma felt the air squeeze out of her lungs. She turned to Damien—but he didn’t move. Didn’t speak. Not until everyone else left. Then he stood, slow and deliberate. “You should’ve told me about him.” “You never asked,” she said, trembling. “That’s not how this works,” he said. “You don’t get to keep secrets in my world.” “I didn’t think my past would get me accused of betrayal.” He closed the distance between them in two strides. “Everyone’s past gets weaponized. Yours just happened to get used faster.” Tears threatened, but she forced them back. “I don’t know if I can keep doing this.” “Then walk,” he said, his voice low. Right now. Walk away from me, from this job, from everything.” Emma’s lip trembled. “Is that what you want?” “No.” He cupped her face with one hand. “But I want to see if you’ll choose to stay.” Her heart cracked under the weight of the moment. And she didn’t move. --- Later That Night Emma lay in her bed, staring at the ceiling. The man she’d once trusted had come back into her life like a ghost—and now her career was in pieces. Damien had offered protection, but never safety. Not really. And yet… she hadn’t left, she didn’t want to. Was she falling for him? Or was she falling under him? The next morning, she walked into the office to find a brown envelope waiting at her desk. No name. No return address. Inside: a flash drive. Emma stared at it, dread pooling in her stomach. She plugged it in, hands trembling. A video opened. Grainy footage. Audio low. It was Damien. In a dimly lit bar. Speaking to someone she couldn’t see clearly. But his words? “She’s perfect. Naive enough to mold. Desperate enough to need me. "I just need her to sign.” Emma’s breath left her body. The contract. Their deal. Her fingers went numb. She couldn’t tell when the video ended. Couldn’t move. All she could hear was his voice—charming, cool, cruel. Was this all a game for him?
