Greyson’s POV
It had been nearly a month since I discovered from Elder Reiner what my true mate looked like, and all I wanted from the moment I woke till I laid down to sleep was to run to her side.
I shook my head and ran my hands back through my wavy black hair as I sat on my bed, “This isn’t good.” I whispered, pulling myself from my warm bed.
‘What isn’t good?’ Koal sincerely asked.
“I don’t know how long I can handle being away from Ren. I need her. I know that all my stress over everything: the coronation, managing the territories, and the unnatural movements that the vampires have been making recently. I know it would all disappear if I could just see her face. Maybe she would even let me hold her hand.” I said as I stared at the ground, embarrassed slightly at the thought.
‘So what wouldn’t be good about that? Cause those sound like good things to me,' Koal said in a confused tone.
“It isn’t good because we haven’t even officially met our mate, and she already has us completely wrapped around her finger.” I grabbed my phone from the dresser and stared at the beautiful photo of Ren.
‘I understand what you are saying. She is quite the catch,’ Pride swelled within Koal’s voice as we gazed at our mate.
I nodded and placed my phone back on the dresser, “Only three more days, and we will get to meet our mate.” I said as I got ready for the full schedule ahead.
Melean’s POV
I sat in the café, drumming my nails quietly on the table.
'Why can’t I find a way to get into the Silver Moon territory? I should have realized it wouldn’t be easy, but I never would have guessed that locating a point of entry would take so long.'
I continued to wonder these things when I felt a pull coming from behind me. I hadn’t felt anything like this, and with this pull came an overwhelming feeling of needing to protect something, but what? I turned around and saw… King Alexander?
“This isn’t possible,” I whispered as I tightly closed my eyes and shook my head, trying to get a hold of myself. When I opened my eyes, there was a beautiful silver-haired werewolf with shining purplish-pink eyes, and something about how she carried herself reminded me of the late king, but that was impossible; the late king was a vampire, and this woman was clearly a werewolf. I watched the girl, not understanding why I felt so drawn to her as she and her friend were seated at a booth only a few tables from where I was sitting. Unable to resist, I tuned into the silver-haired wolf's conversation as the realization that she was the wolf Jullian had been desperately searching for hit me.
“So, did Quinn go with Jace to try on his tux as well,” The thin she-wolf with blond hair asked.
“Yeah, he wanted to make sure one last time that everything was perfect for his first royal event,” the silver-haired woman said; her voice was soft and cute, and she made an involuntary smile spread across my face.
“Don’t tell me, is he expecting to find his mate,” The she-wolf with auburn hair said. “Because I don’t see that happening. I mean, he’s only 16 years old.”
“Yeah, but his birthday is coming up, and it isn’t unheard of for strong wolves to find their mates before they turn seventeen,” The sweet, silvered-haired wolf said.
“Ren, do you think he can find his mate this early?” The blond spoke up.
I silently whispered thank you to the blond she-wolf for speaking the name of the silver-haired she-wolf before directing my attention back to their conversation when the hair on the back of my neck began to stand on end. I turned my attention to the front door as five vampire assassins entered the café.
The assassins had to have been sent by King Jullian because they were his elite team. Adrian was the brains and leader of the group. Then there were the triplets, Zack, Zero, and Zion, the group's brawn, and lastly, there was Chase, the group's tracker. If they were here, it could only mean one thing: that Jullian was becoming desperate.
‘Why is he so desperate to find this girl? Does he feel a pull towards her like I do?’ I shook my head, ‘No, that couldn’t be it because he wasn’t searching for her this relentlessly till the wolf slave told him about her.
I let out a slow, steady breath and closed my eyes to focus on the group of assassins that entered.
“That’s her, right? You know the she-wolf sitting over there,” Zero asked, pointing in her direction.
Adrian lowered his hand on Zero’s as I rolled my eyes at Zero’s stupidity. “Yes, that is her,” Adrian said as the waitress stared lustfully at the group of vampires.
“Is there anything I can get you,” She batted her makeup-caked eyes at them and pushed up her chest to accentuate her cleavage.
“We’ll have three rare steaks, two rare hamburgers, and five beers,” Adrian stated, handing the menu to her without glancing in her direction.
Irritation consumed her expression as none of the guys she was trying to seduce even glanced in her direction. “We’ll have your order right out, " she angrily mumbled as Chase waved her off in an attempt to hurry her along. She turned on her heels and stormed off towards the kitchen as their conversation continued as if she had never been there.
“We are to follow them, and when there are the fewest witnesses, we are to capture the silver-haired one,” Adrian said as he crossed his chiseled arms over his broad chest.
“And what are we supposed to do with the witnesses?” Zion asked as he ran his hand over his bald head.
“Do you mean the other werewolves,” Adrian asked. Zion nodded, and Adrian continued, “Then you can kill them; they aren’t important.”
“I would like to know why Jullian would be so interested in this she-wolf,” Zack wondered.
“Yeah, and why did he send us on this mission? It’s not like we get to kill everyone,” Zion wondered as Chase smacked him on the back of his head.
“That is King Jullian or his majesty, not simply Jullian, you moron,” Chase said as he shook his head. “Anyway, we are here because his majesty discovered that the report he had received from Melean was false. We are going to kill her on sight.”
“Seriously, that is cold. She has faithfully served him for over ten years,” Zack said, shaking his head.
I already knew that he was planning on getting rid of me, so it is no surprise that they were also sent here for me. I’m just glad that I brought my Ora gem with me. I said to myself as I tightly clenched the stone that hung around my neck and hid my presence.
Their conversation lasted for forty-five minutes until the group of she-wolves got up to leave. I discreetly walked past the car that Ren and her friends were getting into. Then I placed a small tracking device on the bottom of the car and then slipped into my Mercedes-Benz.
Not wanting to be discovered, I decided that I would wait in my car for five minutes and then follow after them.
I carefully watched the marker move down the road when, suddenly, the tracker I placed on Ren’s car disappeared. I pulled over, thinking it was a malfunction on my end, so I typed in a few advanced tracker settings only to find that the device was more than fifty feet off the road. Horror gripped me as I tore out of my car, leaving it behind to race through the trees to the tracking device's location.
‘Please let Ren be okay,’ Was the only thing that raced through my mind as if it were on repeat.
When I came upon the accident scene, it was more gruesome than I ever could have imagined. There were mangled car parts in every direction and broken-marred trees. Fire and ash completely blanketed the surrounding area. I stared at the disaster that was before me in complete shock when I heard howls of anger and anguish erupt from within the burning trees. I crept a little further into the tree to find a fierce battle between werewolves and vampires playing out before me, and even though there were five werewolves, one being an Alpha, one a beta, and the rest were omegas, but none of them were Ren.
I frantically searched for Ren, repeating the words, 'Please be okay,' over and over again in my head. When I found her, I felt a crushing weight of agony wash over me as she held the lifeless body of a young werewolf in her arms, and wails of despair escaped her lips.
