"Until six years ago, humans were the masters of everything on this planet. They believed themselves invincible because of the power they had acquired after conquests and looting. Many of us fought alongside them, we loved them, raised their children, and became Allies. Eventually vampires, werewolves, warlocks, and witches, fae among other creatures became nothing more than a myth. We were part of science fiction books and horror movies. But one race rebelled against them. They believed they would do it. something good for all of us however the only thing they caused was more death and disaster. "
The Countess took a break to take a sip from her goblet of wine. To Sia this woman gave the impression of being wiser than she appeared. There was something in his eyes ... an incomparable melancholy ... What was it? Caden took Sia to The Countess after the show. It took her many hours to convince him to do her this favor and eventually he agreed on the condition that she was to leave him alone for the rest of the week. In contrast, this strange woman agreed without the need to beg or use the power of conviction. It was strange how she was both an open and a closed book.
“The vampires? Why them and not any other race?” Sia asked leaning forward to pick up her cup of tea from the coffee table.”
"They suffered more than all of us. In them lies a legendary power, something that is not of this world. We were born thanks to mother nature, to the spirits of the elements however they ... I have no words to explain it. But you should know that they were the cause of all this devastation.” The sincerity on her voice struck Sia like a lightning on an empty field. "Eventually everything fell apart. They created a system in which there was no place for other creatures. Many submitted to the power of bloodsucking demons but others, like us, left to fight for a new world. A home for us. Freedom is ours and all we have to do is reach out and take it."
Sia scoffed. “You speak of freedom when you force your people to fight to the death. There is no honor in that and no greater good. The only thing I see in this place are walls sweating greed.”
“Sweet girl, you have no idea what you're saying. There are so many things that you do not understand because you have only seen what lies on the surface. There is a dark sea beneath the blood that has been spilled at The Pitt. One day you will understand.”
"I'm not interested in understanding anything. The only thing I want to know is why I have been brought back to life against my will. There is nothing here for me. My mother has died, my village no longer exists. There is nothing left more than the blurry memories in my mind.” Sia’s voice broke at the mention of her mama. “What do you want? Why does Caden says you want to help me?”
The Countess smiled a genuinely sweet smile and reached out to hold onto Sia’s hands. Her skin felt farm against her own. She noticed Caden tense, he was standing behind his mistress. “I know who killed you.” She whispered. “I know he betrayed you… the man you loved ripped out the heart off your chest and kept it after the ritual was over.”
“Why do you know this?” Sia tried to pull her hands out of hers but her fingers tightened painfully so.
“Because I know him. Because I know the story of the wolf who seduced an innocent girl to use her and thus break the curse that tormented his pathetic and rabid pack. He travels cities in search of other packs to challenge the Alphas and recruit them. "The Countess laughed humorously and licked her lips." Long ago he tried to challenge Caden but could not defeat him and Caden did not defeat him either. The battle ended in a draw.”
“You know Gideon?” His name was like a drug for her, soon she found herself desiring to mention it again.
"He is a tyrant. A bloody dictator. But he has not been able to conquer my lands. He has strength in numbers, but he lacks strategy to carry out his plans."
“He was never that way… he was always sweet and kind and loving. The Gideon I remember has no mean bone in his body.”
She smirked, Sia realized her mistake a little too late. “And yet this puritan killed you after promising you the stars and the moon. Do not be fooled, my girl, he was nothing more than a demon disguised as a sheep. He used you for his own benefit and moved on with his life. Do you think it's fair?"
“No, not it wasn’t.” And it would never be fair. Sia still couldn't accept the fact that this had really happened to her, they were both so in love, they had made so many promises and he threw it all away. In a way and deep in her heart, Sia could understand Gideon's reasons for killing her but what she couldn't accept was the knowledge that he never really loved her and only used her for his own benefit and that of his pack. Were all wolves the same? Were all wolves deceitful and liars? "I still don't understand why I'm here. What is your role in all this? I have no desire to sound like a martyr, however you have to know - if you really heard about my past - that I have suffered enough. A part of me wants to see him one more time but there is another part of me that needs justice. I am… torn.”
"And that is precisely what I offer you, Sia." Sia was surprised to hear her name again. It had been so long since someone spoke that name. "Let me help you carry out your revenge against Gideon Collins."
Sia narrowed her gaze. The offer was tempting. “What do you get out of this?”
“More.”
Sia had two options, refuse and die or accept and die anyway. Such a decision could not be made lightly. The Countess seemed to notice Sia's indecision and offered her a few days to think about her offer and make a choice. Sia agreed to the extra time even though she knew perfectly well that her answer was already yes.
