“When are we gonna leave? It’s about a week-long trip by foot, so shouldn’t we leave soon?” Amon asked, already visibly excited and impatient, though he tried to hide it.
“It’ll be less than that.” I said grabbing a small bag packed with only the necessities.
“How though?” He asked, looking confused.
“I have my ways of getting where I need to go without the long trips.” I said, grabbing another bag with some other supplies and tossing it to Amon.
He caught it and looked at me confused, “This isn’t enough stuff to even make it through the forest. How do you plan on getting out of here?” He asked, clearly confused.
“If you might recall, I’m a god and I still have my powers. You might not have been able to teleport but I can. I can do just about anything. It just usually comes with a price.” I said, a small sad smile on my face.
“Wow… I’ve never met a god that can actually teleport. What’s it like?” He asked, curious.
“It’s not much. You just end up somewhere else. And most of the gods you’ve met are descendants of the first gods so they don’t have full powers but only what their parents wanted to let go for any of their offsprings. So if you’re a descendant of a god of demons then that god only gave you the powers he probably thought were worthless to him or her. And if you’re also a descendant of the dragon kin you’ll gain the ability to control weather only because you’re a dragon god, which for some reason that power gets passed down without the parent losing it. Although you can lose it or never even learn to control it.” I said, opening the door, Amon following me out. Looking at me with what looked like a slight smirk. “Are you smirking?”
“I might be.” He said laughing a little.
“And why would you be smirking? There’s absolutaly no reason.” I said, my head tipping slightly, an old habbit I got from watching Atsuki. I could feel my ears twitch a little in confusion and slight frustration.
“It’s just that this is about the most you’ve talked to me since I’ve been here. Other than when you snapped at me earlier. And I also just now realized that your ears can kinda give away how you’re feeling. It’s kinda cute…” He said, blushing slightly while looking away quickly.
“Cute…? I- What do you mean by cute…?” I stammered slightly, my face probably bright red and I was glancing around trying to find random things to look at other than Amon.
“Nothing. It just kinda slipped out. I’m sorry.” He said nervously looking at me as if he did something wrong.
“It’s fine, I just wasn’t expecting it. It really caught me off guard.” I said, my face still red and my ears warm to the touch by now. I felt slightly ashamed for feeling a little disappointed that he apologized for calling me cute. I shouldn’t want him to call me cute, but I did. I wanted him to call me cute again and to hug me and tell me everything would be alright and for me to comfort him when he’s feeling down. But I couldn’t have that. I could never have it.
We both stood there for a second, still a little flustered. Till finally Amon broke the silence by asking, “So do you think we could leave soon?”
“Yeah, we can go right now. And it should only take a minute to change the weather. And after that we can part ways, I’ll probably stay in the dragon village for a day and then come back here.” I said walking toward him, putting my hand on his shoulder.
“Do you have to touch me for it to work…?” He asked, looking down at me.
It was the first time I’d really gotten a good look at him since I found him out in the forest. His wings were big and strong looking, scally black, you could definitely tell they were dragon wings. His horns were shiny black. His hair looked even whiter than when I first saw him, probably because the sun was shining through the trees onto him.
“Yeah, I have to touch you to be able to teleport you with me. Now are you ready?” I asked, looking up at him.
“Ready as I’ll ever be.” He said, looking back down at me.
I shut my eyes and thought about the dragon village and then when I opened my eyes we had teleported there. It was beautiful. There were trees that seemed to tower over everything and then there were houses that varied in size. Some giant, for the dragon kin that liked to stay in their dragon form and some smaller, for the ones that liked to stay more human-like. There were mainly dragon kin but there were a few other species scattered around. I looked up to see Amon staring down at me with awe and maybe a hint of… longing? I quickly looked away, embarrassed that he wanted something of mine.
“So do you have a house here by chance? Or do I gotta pull some old strings to get us a place to stay for tonight till we split ways?” I asked, still not making eye contact.
“Yeah so about that, I kinda left everything I had here to the girl I loved a long time ago and she disappeared so I do believe she just sold my stuff or traded it or maybe just gave it away, not sure. So you might have to pull some strings.” He said, looking away sheepishly.
I sighed and looked around, gathering the layout of the village seeing what all had changed, not much. My eyes were drawn to the once familiar house on top of the mountain, the houses were all scattered around the mountain edge and the actual mountain.
“I guess I get to visit an old friend…” I said, sighing yet again.
“An old friend? I thought your curse affected anyone around you though, so how are they still alive?” Amon said, looking at me with a confused look on his face.
“He didn’t want me to stay too long because he was smart and didn’t want his village to turn out like the ones from my earlier years…” I said, walking over to a random dragon man that was in his human form, his wings were a dark scaly blue and he had blue scales on parts of his arms and other skin that was showing.
“What’re you doing?” Amon asked, following me.
“Something.” I said to Amon then I turned to the man and tapped his shoulder saying, “Do you know the quickest way to the Chief's house?”
“Flying obviously.” He said, looking down at me realizing I was an elf and not a dragon kin. “Ah, well I mean if you can’t fly there are people you can pay to fly you up there or sometimes you can get someone to fly you for free.” Then he walked away in a rush like he was late for something, maybe work.
“Now we gotta find someone to fly us…” I said looking around at the many dragon kin that passed by.
“You do know… Ah never mind.” Amon said laughing. I then realized he was flexing his wings. I blushed and looked away, embarrassed that I forgot Amon had wings even though I had just been admiring them shortly before.
“I can’t believe I forgot you’re part dragon kin.” I said, putting my hands up to my face and crouching down.
“I was just gonna let you try and find someone to help and see how long it took till you realized I have wings.” He said, still laughing at me.
“Can you even carry me though?” I asked, standing back up and looking at him, tilting my head to the side.
“I can carry someone triple my weight at the very least, so I think you’re fine.” He said when he finally stopped laughing.
“How do you carry-” I gasped mid sentence as Amon picked me up without any warning at all. His wings opened up all the way and they seemed to move so gracefully and effortlessly.
I frantically looked around, gripping onto Amon’s arms fearfully. I then pressed my face against his chest, so I couldn't see the world below me. Turns out I don’t like heights too much when it comes to flying.
“Are you scared?” Amon whispered to me. I looked up to see how amusing he found this.
“I- I’m not scared. I was just startled is all.” I said, looking down once more only to let out a small squeak and to shove my face back into Amon, gripping his arms even harder, feeling his muscle, which he quite evidently had.
“I think you are scared though.” He said, laughing a little.
“Am not!” I said, into his chest. My face was probably really red by now, along with my ears.
“Don’t worry, we’re close to the top. Just another minute or two.” He said, his voice soothing my panic. I glanced out at the view one more time, seeing he was right. We were basically on top of the mountain, it was beautiful. There was snow everywhere and the sun was shining down on it, making it look so pretty. You could see many dragons and even small little people down that would most likely have been dragon kin in human form.
“Wow… It’s so pretty.” I said, gasping and looking up at Amon. He was staring down at me, smiling.
“It really is pretty.” He said, not glancing away from me for what seemed like an eternity. Then when he finally glanced away he said, “We’re here.” And landed right in front of the giant house.
“I forgot how big it was…” I said, staring at the house.
“Me too.” He said.
I realized I was still in Amon’s arms and said, “Are you going to put me down now?”
“If that’s what you want, then yeah.” He said, putting me back down on the ground.
I looked up at Amon and then away quickly.. “Let's do this.” I said, walking to the door and knocking on it.
Amon followed me to the door, not even what seemed like a second after we knocked a man opened the door. He was tall, about 6 foot, and had long silky black hair. His skin was covered in spots of red scales and he had big red wings and beautiful red spirally dragon horns. He was wearing a long leather dragon skin jacket that he’s had since I knew him, and a pair of what seemed to be jeans. He looked down and smiled at me, a warm familiar smile that I had missed.
“Mizu, what a pleasant surprise. It’s been a couple thousand years if I remember correctly. How have you been?” He asked, sounding happy.
“I’m doing… ok. And you?” I asked.
“I’m great.” He said, his voice seeming like it could be heard by everyone while in fact it couldn’t.
“That’s good.” I said, smiling at him.
“Are you going to introduce me to your new friend, and see if we may perhaps know each other in any way?” He said, a slight smirk appearing on his face.
“Ah, yes. Arman this is Amon, Amon this is Armon.” I said, gesturing back and forth at the two.
“It’s nice to see you again, son. I see you’ve finally met a girl worth your time.” Armon said, smiling at Amon.
“If only I could say the same.” Amon said, glaring at his dad.
“Wait, you’re father and son? And you didn’t just tell me the Chief was your dad?” I said, staring at Amon with disbelief.
“I didn’t say anything because I haven’t spoken to him in years. And for all I know he could’ve been dead by now, he is only half god. I’ve got more god in me than him anyways.” He said, a hint of anger in his voice.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re a god or I’m a god because neither of us can help this place due to our loss of powers for stupid reasons.” Armon said, looking at his son and then me, smiling.
“Which is why I’m here.” I said, smiling slightly at both Amon and Armon.
“How can you help?” Armon asked, looking down at me with a confused look.
“I still have my powers.” I said.
“She can also give my powers back to me for a few days.” Amon said, hinting for me to cave and give him power back.
“But I won’t do that because it'll kill him afterwards.” I said, glaring at Amon for trying to get me to give him powers again.
“We would really appreciate your help but we can’t accept it. Only a dragon kin would be accepted by the others to change the weather here. It would be better for you to give me or my son the power to change the weather so we can help our people before we die.” Armon said, placing his hand on my head, reminding me of back when I was still but a child wandering the world all alone, lost and helpless. Back when he found me and helped me understand my curse within the short time that I stayed with him. Back when I finally knew what it was like to be taken care of. Back when I didn’t understand why everyone around me died.
“But I want to help.” I said barley louder than a whisper.
“You would be helping if you just gave me my power and then I can help everyone.” Amon said, pushing his dad's hand from my head to put his hand on my head and pat me instead.
“But then you’ll die…” I said, looking up at Amon only to see his pleading look. He wanted this so bad. He wanted to save his people. He wanted to die to save everyone here.
“Please…” He said, he sounded so desperate.
I looked at Armon and pleaded, “But you know me… You practically raised me in the short time we met, can’t you let me help. Won’t they understand if they know that you raised me?” Armon sighed and shook his head sadly.
“Unfortunatly that’s not how anyone would see it. They would’ve acknowledged you if they remembered you but no one is left that remembers you other than me. I’m sorry.”
I looked back at Amon and answer his plea, “If it's what you really want then I guess I have to do it…” I said, holding tears back. I finally found someone I wanted to keep alive again and now I have to kill him. I hate this. Why does life have to be like this?
“Thank you! Thank you so much. You don’t know how much this means to me…” He said, looking at me with such a happy yet sad look on his face.
“You could give the power to me so I die instead of Amon dying.” Armon said, looking at Amon then at me.
“I already said I’d give Amon his power so I won’t go back on my word…” I said, looking up at Armon with a sad look. I knew it was going to be hard for Armon to lose his son but I think I’d rather lose Amon than I would Armon. Armon helped me a lot back when I didn’t know anything. I knew Armon better, I trusted him more. He was like a father to me.
Armon sighed and looked at me with a sad look and said, “I can get you a place to stay in the inn here if you need me too.”
“That would be great.” I said, giving him a small smile.
“I’ll head on down to the inn and get us the rooms.” Amon said, already on his way out.
“I’m only gonna get you one room. It’s a busy time this year. And plus I think you might want to have the same room so you can talk through how giving his powers back will work.” Armon said while Amon walked out and shut the door after hearing him.
Armon looked at me and said, “Is there any way you can just give me the power now so I don’t have to lose him? I don’t want to lose him either.”
“What do you mean by ‘lose him either’?” I asked, tilting my head slightly.
“In the era Amon was born in, it was the same era that there was that god going around trying to kill all other gods. One of their victims was Amon’s mother, Lilith, she was the Goddess of Demons. Amon’s horns are the exact same as hers. Same color, same shape, same size. His wings are the same color as his mothers except his wings belong to a dragon kin and not a demon. He reminds me of her so much. It’d be like losing her all over again if he died.” I’d never seen him look so sad and I didn’t want that but I couldn’t kill him.
“I didn’t know.” I said, looking up at Armon feeling bad.
“Please don’t take my son from me too…” He said, looking down at me with a pleading look.
“I can’t though. If I could I would but I can't. I’m sorry.” I said, looking away, feeling guilty.
He sighed and then smiled a sad smile at me and said, “It’s fine, You made a promise. You should be able to get in the inn now. You can leave now…” He said, turning away from me. Hurt in his voice.
“Bye…” I said, turning to leave but deciding to turn back around, walk up to Armon, giving him a small hug before turning back and leaving for what I assume will be the last time. I’d be leaving him with a bitter taste in his mouth after I caused his sons death just like that god a long time ago.
