Chapter 2

Storm Vale Pack's main house looms before me, its weathered stone facade speaking of decades of history. I haven't had time to change, and I'm acutely aware of how I must look - clothes stained with blood and covered in forest debris. Not exactly the professional first impression I'd planned to make. The elderly housekeeper who opens the door takes one look at me and gasps, her hand flying to her throat. Her name tag reads "Ethel" in neat cursive script. "Oh my stars!" she exclaims, eyes widening as she takes in my appearance. "Are you... are you the guardian we're expecting?" I offer what I hope is a reassuring smile. "Sentinel Lyra, at your service. I apologize for my current state - there was an... incident in the forest this morning." Ethel's expression shifts from shock to concern. "Yes, we heard about the attack on Alpha Thane. He's in the healers' house now." She hesitates, wringing her hands. "Should I show you to your room first? Perhaps you'd like to clean up?" "The room next to Alpha Thane's," I say firmly. It's not a request. "For protection purposes. And I'll need to know where the healers' house is immediately after." Her eyes widen slightly at my directness, but she nods. "Of course, of course. Follow me, please." I follow Ethel up a grand staircase, noting every detail of the house's layout as we go. Years of training have made such observations second nature. Emergency exits, defensible positions, potential weak points - my mind catalogs them all automatically. "Alpha Thane's room is here," Ethel says, gesturing to a solid oak door. "And this will be your room." She opens the adjacent door, revealing a spacious bedroom with a clear view of the grounds. "Perfect," I say, dropping my pack inside. "I need to inspect the Alpha's room first." Ethel hesitates. "But... he's not there currently, and it's his private space..." "Which I need to assess for security purposes," I finish firmly but kindly. "It's standard procedure, Ethel. I promise I'll be respectful." She wrings her hands once more before nodding reluctantly and producing a key. I can tell she's uncomfortable with this breach of her Alpha's privacy, but security takes precedence. The Alpha's room is exactly what I'd expect from the leader of a pack this size - spacious but not ostentatious. My eyes scan every detail, building a picture of the man I'm assigned to protect. A mug on the desk catches my attention, emblazoned with "#1 Alpha" in bold letters. Clearly a gift from someone who respects him. More telling is the potted plant by the window - healthy, well-maintained, positioned to catch optimal sunlight. It speaks of attention to detail and patience. Not common traits in Alphas, who tend to be more focused on immediate action than long-term care. "Well, well... what do we have here?" The voice drips with disdain. I turn to find a striking woman standing in the doorway, her perfectly manicured nails tapping against the frame. Everything about her screams 'trying too hard' - from her overdone makeup to her deliberately casual pose. "And you are?" I ask, though I can already guess. "Maven," she announces, as if I should recognize the name. "The future Luna of Storm Vale Pack." She sashays into the room like she owns it, dropping an expensive-looking bag on Thane's bed. "And you're in my future mate's private space." I feel my eyebrows rise. "Future mate? Interesting. I wasn't aware Alpha Thane had found his true mate." A flicker of something - anger? fear? - crosses her face before she masks it with a smile. "Well, it's only a matter of time. We're perfect for each other. Everyone says so." "Everyone except the Moon Goddess, apparently," I reply dryly. "Since you're not wearing a mate mark." Her face flushes red. "How dare you! Just who do you think you are?" "Sentinel Lyra," I say, moving to pick up her bag. "The Alpha's assigned guardian. And this?" I walk to the window, bag in hand. "This doesn't belong here." Before she can protest, I drop the bag out the second-story window. Her shriek of outrage is almost musical. "You... you... my designer clothes!" "Are now where they belong - outside the Alpha's private quarters." I turn to face her fully. "Let me be clear, Maven. I'm here to protect Alpha Thane, and that includes protecting him from those who might try to force a mate bond that doesn't exist." She draws herself up, trying to look intimidating. It might work on others, but I've faced down much worse than an entitled wannabe Luna. "You have no right! When Thane hears about this-" "When I hear about what?" We both turn to find Ethel in the doorway, looking apologetic. "Alpha Thane is asking for you both at the healers' house." Maven's demeanor changes instantly, a simpering smile replacing her scowl. "Of course! I'll be right there to comfort my poor injured mate." I resist the urge to roll my eyes as she hurries out. Instead, I turn to Ethel. "Which way to the healers' house?" The healers' house turns out to be a separate building, smaller than the main house but well-maintained. I enter to find Thane propped up on a bed, his chest wrapped in bandages. Maven is already there, practically draped across him in what she probably thinks is an alluring pose. "Sentinel," Thane acknowledges me coolly. "I see you've made yourself at home." "Just doing my job," I reply, equally cool. "How are the injuries?" "Fine," he says shortly. "And speaking of your job - I've been thinking about our arrangement." I can feel where this is going. His tone, his posture, the way Maven smirks - it all adds up to one thing. "I don't need a female guardian," he continues, confirming my suspicion. "Especially one who-" "Who just saved your life this morning?" I interrupt, my voice sharp. "Or have you forgotten how that went?" His jaw tightens. "That was different. And I had the situation under control." A laugh escapes me before I can stop it. "Under control? Is that what you call being pinned down by rogues? Because from where I was standing, you looked like a petulant little boy who bit off more than he could chew." Maven gasps dramatically. "How dare you speak to him like that! Thane, are you going to let her-" "Quiet," Thane growls, his eyes locked on mine. "You think because you helped once, you understand everything about my pack? About what I need?" "I understand that your pride is going to get you killed," I shoot back. "And maybe you don't care about that, but I have a job to do." His eyes narrow. "Is that what this is about? Your job? Or maybe..." A slow, knowing smile spreads across his face. "Maybe you're jealous." "Jealous?" I repeat, incredulous. "Of what Maven and I have," he continues, wrapping an arm around Maven's waist. "The freedom to choose our mates, to build a life together." For a moment, I'm tempted to laugh again. But something in me snaps instead. "You're right," I say quietly, dangerously. "I do envy that freedom. The freedom to find my true mate, to build a real connection - not this pathetic facade you're trying to force." Maven starts to protest, but I cut her off with a look that could freeze hell. "But don't mistake envy for jealousy, Alpha," I continue. "I despise what you're doing here - trying to force a mate bond that doesn't exist, potentially denying both yourself and Maven the chance to find your true mates. That's not something to be jealous of. It's something to pity." The room falls silent. I can see the fury in Thane's eyes, the shock on Maven's face, the discomfort radiating from the healers who are trying to pretend they're not listening to every word. "Get out," Thane growls. I straighten to my full height, meeting his glare with one of my own. "I will. But I'll be back for the ceremony. Whether you like it or not, I'm your guardian now. The sooner you accept that, the better chance we both have of surviving this assignment." With that, I turn and walk out, my boots echoing on the wooden floor. Behind me, I can hear Maven's attempts at soothing words, but they're drowned out by the pounding of my own heart. I've just managed to antagonize the very person I'm supposed to protect, challenge his choice of potential mate, and probably scandalize half his pack. Samuel would be having fits if he knew. But as I make my way back to my room, I can't bring myself to regret it. Sometimes the truth needs to be said, no matter how uncomfortable it makes people. And if Thane thinks this confrontation will make me back down from my duty, he's about to learn just how stubborn a guardian can be.
