Chapter 4

The ambulance rushed me to the hospital. The resuscitation lasted three hours before they pulled me back from the edge. The attending physician came to my bedside with the test results. "Ms. York, the anaphylactic shock is under control. But the tests show you were six weeks pregnant." The doctor paused. "The severe allergic reaction triggered contractions, and the prolonged oxygen deprivation from the shock—I'm sorry. The baby didn't survive." Those words hit me like a sledgehammer, shattering every sense I had left. I stared blankly at the pale white ceiling, unable to shed a single tear. Harvey had left me on the floor like trash—for Charlotte, who was only faking a heart attack. He'd nearly killed me. And he'd unknowingly killed his own unborn child. At that moment, my heart died along with that baby. After the doctor left, I pulled out the IV, ignoring the nurses' protests, and went back to the apartment. I needed to retrieve my most important data card—and sever all ties with Harvey for good. The moment I opened the door, the pop of a champagne cork and the sound of drunken laughter reached my ears. Charlotte was half-dressed, practically draped over Harvey. Harvey held up his glass, beaming with pride. "To Sterling Group landing the municipal security project tomorrow! Once we win this contract, the company's cash flow problem is solved!" When he saw me standing at the doorway, there was no guilt on his face—only irritation. "Yvonne, why are you haunting me like some bitter ghost? All you needed was a shot at the hospital. Did you have to come back just to ruin the mood?" I said nothing. I walked to the liquor cabinet, picked up a bottle of red wine, and smashed it against the glass coffee table. The bottle shattered. Dark red wine mixed with shards of glass splattered all over them. Charlotte shrieked and curled into Harvey's arms. Harvey shot to his feet and pointed at me, his voice rising to a roar. "Have you lost your mind, Yvonne? Look at yourself—hysterical, pathetic. Is this how a master's graduate from a top university behaves?" I stared back at him, cold as ice. "Take your trash and get the hell out of my apartment. Now!" Harvey gritted his teeth and let out a sneer. "Fine. I don't have time to deal with a crazy woman." He pulled Charlotte to her feet. At the door, he turned back to look down at me. "Tomorrow's bid is make-or-break for Sterling Group. Stay here and think about your behavior. When I win that contract, I'll come back and teach you how to be a proper fiancée." The door slammed shut behind him. I wiped the blood trickling from the back of my hand where the IV had been pulled, and dialed Director Smith's number. "Director, I'll go to the reception tomorrow. And I'll personally review Sterling Group's bid materials."
