Such A Sweet Friend

Zoey's pov It all happened in a flash, Laura. I was being attacked by an unknown man that was armed with a gun. The man you saved me from previously was the second man who attacked me. The first had a gun, and the second wanted to r**e me as you well saw. "So you mean a man attacked you with a gun?" Laura asked with a surprised look. "What could he have wanted from you?" "I'm not sure what he wanted from me exactly, Laura. I don't know what he was after. At first, I thought he was after my money or jewelry that I could have possessed, which I don't have any. But it ended up being a different thing this man wanted from me. He wanted my life, Laura. It was a miracle I escaped." "Jess, you mean all this happened? Is this how unsafe Atlanta is?" "You can't tell if Atlanta is safe or unsafe. It might be that we just ended up being unlucky at the wrong time and wrong place." I could see how Laura was so disturbed and pained by what had happened to me. If I was able to reverse time, I would first bring my parents back. Everything changed when my father brought a new wife into the house. My mum died three years before this new woman came into the house. She was so good to us; she was no different from my actual mother. But everything happened in a blink. We lost both of them, and even my dad's property was taken away from us. We couldn't fight or do anything about it. When I contacted my father's lawyer, he said that it was my father's will to transfer all the properties to the orphanage home. I kept wondering why my father could have made such a decision. He had loved and cared for us in every aspect. Why did he make such a choice for his only children? "Thank you, Laura, for saving me once again. I don't know what could have happened if you were not there to attack that bastard. Now that I have told you what happened, please eat your food. I know you must be hungry. Don't fake it. Start eating," I said with a warm smile. "Sister, if things like this are happening here, you have to be careful. I think it was because we stayed too long outside, that's why such a thing happened," Laura added with a sad look. She picked up her spoon and began eating. After some time, when we were done eating, my eyes became heavy, and Laura was already asleep. I looked at her face with pity. She's too young to experience all this; she's just 16 years old. I will do anything to fend for her no matter what. I vow. The next morning, I was awakened by a knock on the door. I stood up, went straight to the door, and opened it. "Good morning, Zoey," Rowan muttered with a warm smile on his face. "Good morning," I replied with sleepy eyes. "How was your night, Rowan?" I asked. "My night was good," he replied. "Zoey, please, can I have a word with you after you are done eating your breakfast? Which I will be bringing to you in the next twenty minutes." "No problem with that, Rowan. We will talk as soon as I'm done." Just as Rowan was about to go, I held his hand and drew him back a bit. "Thank you, Rowan. Thank you for accommodating us. I don't know what we could have done without you showing up." With a sharp laugh, Rowan replied with a sneer, "It's nothing, Zoey. I'm always here for you if you need anything." My heart was filled with appreciation towards Rowan. I was pleased and glad he could help. But this won't last long, I need a job, to take care of myself and my sister. Some minutes later, Rowan returned with huevos rancheros, a Mexican dish, well prepared. Its aroma struck my nose, and my stomach started yawning and groaning. I couldn't wait to start digging on it. "Sorry for wasting your time, Zoey. I took my time preparing this for you. Rancheros was your favorite. I could remember when you always talked about it when we were still kids. So to bring back old memories, I decided to prepare it for you." "Thank you, Rowan, that's sweet of you. You went through all this stress just for me," I replied with a warm smile, unable to grasp how kind Rowan was to me. He's such a sweet man. To be sincere, huevos rancheros was my favorite. I was even wondering how he could remember my favorite food. Could he have been thinking about me all this while? My biological mother was Mexican, and she always prepared it for us. It has a unique taste that's similar to everyone cooking it. I collected the breakfast from his hands and thanked him once more. I kept it on the desk. Laura was still asleep. I have to wake her; if not, she will sleep until noon. "Wakie wakie, Laura, food is ready," I whispered into her ear. She quickly bolted up from the bed and faced me in an instant. "I can perceive the aroma of huevos rancheros. Where is it?" Laura retorted with sleepy eyes. "Hey, baby, calm down. I know you love it as well, but where you are looking is not where the food is. Look down, baby," I said with a smile. Laura didn't even notice that the food was in front of her. She was totally looking somewhere else. Could the scent be coming from outside? I think the air moved the location to somewhere else. "But before you start eating, Laura, you have to go brush your teeth first," I instructed. "Please, Zoey, can't I just eat before brushing?" Laura groaned with a furrowed brow and pursed lips. "No, you can't. Do as I said," I responded. Laura stood up in frustration and walked straight to the bathroom. She brushed her teeth and came back. She was so fast that I couldn't grasp how many minutes she spent doing that. I smiled and shook my head. She sat on the bed without wasting any time and began eating. "So, Zoey, what next now? What are we going to do to earn a living? We can't just watch your friend Rowan providing for us," Laura muttered calmly while eating.
