Zoey's pov
“Aaaah! Help!” “I tried to scream out if someone could come to my rescue, but it was futile. My voice was dry and unable to perform its duties. As I was about to shout the second time, the imposter quickly rushed his lips onto mine and started k*ssing me uncontrollably.
"Get... Get.. off me," I tried to speak out, but his breath entirely interrupted my words.
Looking for a way out of his alcoholic, disgusting breath, I bite him on the lips with all my strength, which left a big injury on his lips.
"Aaaaah!" The man screamed in pain as he retreat. "s**t! You bite off my lips, you b***h. You will surely pay," the man groaned angrily as he glared at me while holding his bleeding mouth. Just as he was about to unleash his wrath on me by slapping the hell out of me, my sister's voice, Laura, sounded.
"Get off my sister, you bastard!" Before I knew it, Laura used a plank she had picked from the ground and hit the man on the head. He fell over to the ground while holding his head and screamed in pain.
“You.. You.. b***h,” the man groaned.
Laura quickly held my hands, then lifted me up as we walked out of the dark alley to the train station.
I was dazed, my mind flickering with different thoughts at the same time. Each of my breaths held a sense of unease. My eyes dimmed into their sockets, and I kept on wondering if what just happened was a dream or a true event.
"Zoey, Zoey," my sister Laura called out loud to my face, trying to snap me out of whatever state of frozed I was in.
"What happened? Why was that man kissing you?" she asked with curiosity, her eyes welling up with tears.
My eyes fixed onto Laura's eyes. We gazed at each other while her voice kept sounding from a distance to my face, looking like my consciousness was not with me. I couldn't say a word. I kept asking myself, what would have happened if Laura hadn't come to my rescue? Would I have been messed up by some drunk bastard stranger?”
"Zoey, you are getting me worried. Please talk to me," Laura groaned with tears streaming down her eyes as she laid her head on my leg while I sat on a seat at the train station.
"Tal..talk to me, Zoey," she stuttered, trying to bring back my attention.
"Today was really a bad day for me. I was not only almost r***d but also almost killed. Is that how I'm born to be unlucky?"
"Laura, don't be worried, okay? I'm fine. Thank you for coming to my rescue. If it wasn't for you, I don't know what could have happened," I tried to speak under my breath as I got hold of myself, unable to watch Laura keep on crying without giving her a response.
"You can't just say you are okay. I saw what happened. That man was trying to r**e you. Why do things like this have to happen to us? What have we done to deserve this? Not only do we not have a place to stay, but we also don't have food to eat. What have we really done to deserve this?" Laura groaned in frustration with her arms and legs trembling.
"We are going to be okay, Laura. I have contacted Rowan. He will be here soon."
"I know it's not the right time to yell at you, Zoey, but we have been waiting here for almost a day now. We have been here for more than 15 hours, and there is no sign of the person you called your friend coming to our aid."
"I know, Laura. I know you must be tired and hungry, but we have to wait. He will come soon," I sighed in frustration, completely clueless about what would happen next if Rowan didn't end up coming. Things might get even worse, that drunkard might come back.
My phone suddenly rang. I dipped my hands into my pocket. Seeing an unknown number, I thought for some seconds before picking up the call.
"Hello, Zoey. Sorry for taking so long before calling," Rowan's voice sounded.
Rowan's phone hadn't been reachable for quite some time now, from the moment we arrived in Atlanta. The only time I could talk to him on the phone was when we were about to take our flight at the airport.
"Okay, thank God you called," I replied with a sigh of relief, trying to avoid any argument. What I had gone through today was enough. I needed no more tension in my heart.
"I know you must have been wondering why I couldn't call earlier. It was because I was busy and needed to do a few things before coming," Rowan spoke on the phone again, trying to apologize for his lateness.
I held Laura by her hands and yanked them playfully. "You don't have to be worried, Laura. Stop crying. Rowan will be here soon."
Some minutes later, I saw a man dressed in a short, and a green jacket waving from a distance. I couldn't figure out who it was exactly. When he got closer, I quickly noticed it was Rowan. It had been long since I had seen him. He had totally changed. I was able to see him only in pictures, so I was dazzled.
"Hey, Zoey. Sorry for wasting much of your time," Rowan said, running his hands through his hair with a smile on his face.
"And who do we have here?" Rowan asked with a smile.
"Ooh, this is my sister, Laura," I replied with a grin.
"Wow, she looks much older now. I remember when I was still in New York, she was just a child. Kudos to growth. And she looks more beautiful now. My home is not too far from here. Let's go, it's already late."
"At least we have somewhere to rest our heads for the night," I said to myself. I picked up my bag, and we both walked out of the train station to Rowan's house.
When we got there, Rowan opened the door and welcomed us to his home with a cheerful smile. He showed us to the visitor room and told us to wait, giving us a calm expression of being at home. Some minutes later, he came back to the room with food and some snacks with some chilled drinks.
"I know you must be stressed. Please take this. This is all I can offer for now. I'm also struggling here to make a living as well. But it's nothing. I will do anything for you, Zoey," Rowan said with a grin while walking out of the room.
Rowan was always my close friend back then in New York. He lived with his uncle. We always played hide and seek and mostly visite the live animals park sometimes. He was just like my boyfriend then, despite us being still kids, just 13 years old. It all happened in a flash, I suddenly stopped seeing Rowan around. He just vanished, not to be seen again until I got a call from him after ten years. That was when we rebuilt our friendship. I tried asking him why he vanished without telling me. All he had to say was that his uncle had to move to Atlanta, and he had no choice but to go with him.
"Zoey, you haven't told me what really happened. If you don't talk, I will never stop being worried. I'm your sister, for God's sake. Talk to me, why hiding things from me." Laura groaned, holding my pinky fingers while yanking them gradually, forcing me to answer her questions.
With a sigh, I replied, "Laura, it was very terrible. I'm scared to even talk about it, but since you insisted to know, I have no choice but to tell you. this is how it went..."
