"Not a chance!"
Before I could even breathe, Jonah shouted from the doorway, completely breathless from rushing over.
"I said no."
"Jonah..." Adam let out a heavy sigh. He sounded like a frustrated father acting in my best interest, but his next words crushed whatever tiny sliver of hope I had left. "You're her older brother, and Lucas is your best friend. Why shouldn't they?"
Jonah stepped up and pulled me firmly behind him, shielding me from view. "She's too young."
The two of them locked eyes in a silent, suffocating deadlock, while Lucas couldn't resist stoking the fire.
"Jonah... I don't know if she ever told you, but ever since she was kicked out, I've been the one taking care of her."
