Chapter 22Unknowable, unreachable, it dwelt in shadows. Illuminated by the occasional warmth of the sun, its mass had resided out of sight for so long, crawling ever forward in its orbit until, at last, there were eyes to look upon it again. For decades, it had been unheard of, forgotten, and decades before that, it had been a myth, a story of a sign in the sky that heralded misfortune and bad luck, an ill omen. These were the explanations given for its presence by those who could only look up, those who could not leave their own pale blue-green orb. Its path was set at an angle around the sun that, for the most part, kept it out of reach. Yet for all the distance between them, for all that kept them apart, the history of that veiled world—Lucifer, as the people of the world below called
