Chapter 10Genjo lifted up the newspaper, squinting at the text from behind the thick lenses of his glasses, the plastic frames sliding down his nose. “The new planet,” he read aloud, his voice carrying into the kitchen, “which some have named Lucifer, for both its radiance and its ominous presence, is said to be having an abject effect on the minds of those already prone to distress.” He turned in his chair, looking at his wife as she stood with her back to him at the sink. “Are you listening to this, Marie?” he asked. “I’m listening,” she replied without turning to face him, a hint of bemusement in her voice.
