I HELD ONTO THE WALL AS a guide while I crept forward in the darkness. The corridor was silent, like the silence before a storm. The house was holding its breath for the grand finale. The fear on the housekeeper’s face had been real, nothing short of sheer panic. She warned me about the darkness. Now it had come, and now she was gone. I now understood why she left all the lights on. The lights would probably turn on again, at some point, all on their own. But when, I could only guess. And until then, I was stuck here.
