Chapter 6.

Pandora’s POV. I open my eyes and everything looks sharper. I can see the dust particles as they dance in the room. The fluorescent bulb is so bright and I can hear it buzzing. I can hear the heartbeats of the people in the room and my sense of smell is in overdrive. I groan but it sounds like a whine as I move to stand up. But my legs won’t cooperate with me. “Goddess above, it’s true. She wasn’t lying. Oh, brother, what have you done?” I snap my head up and see the kind one on his knees, and so is the lunatic. I growl in his direction and stop myself as I look down and see … Paws. I’m lying on my side and I take it all in. “Easy, beautiful girl. Easy.” The kind one says, and I try to stand and my legs shake and I fall again before I try again. I finally stand on shaking legs and the tips of my ears brush the light. I look down and I see the white fur, but it has iridescent colours in it like a … Pearl. “How is this possible? She was telling the truth. Oh, goddess, what did I do?” The lunatic says and I look at him and I can see the tears of regret in his eyes. “I’m sorry Pandora I am so sorry. Please forgive me. I thought you were lying, a trick. You truly are a Morningstar.” He says as he bows low until his forehead is touching the tiled floor. I tilt my head to the side. “Why is he bowing?” I ask Pearl, and she chuckles. “We are the last white wolf. I did tell you this when I first came to you five years ago. We are the most revered and holy of Selene’s children. But what I didn’t tell you is that the first alpha of The Night Stalker Pack vowed centuries ago to be the Morningstar’s guardians, the same as every alpha since. Now, it makes sense why he was so hostile. He must have thought you were mocking that vow.” Pearl answers sadly, and I just nod because I understand why he was that way with me. “What shall we do with him?” Pearl asks and I sigh, shaking my head. “I don’t want to hurt anyone or be hurt anymore, Pearl. We have suffered enough, and that doesn’t make it right for us to make others suffer for how we are feeling. He has his reasons, even if they are wrong.” I say to her, and she sighs but agrees. “I suppose you’re right. But if he does that again, I will rip his head off.” She says and I chuckle because I know she will. I take a shaky step forward until I’m looming over him and lower my head and I nudge him with my snout. Goddess, I have a snout. This is going to take some getting used to. He looks up at me, and I nod my head once. Before I turn my enormous head to the kind one and nudge him with my snout and he chuckles and reaches out a shaking hand, and I back away, and he freezes, looking like I just stomped on his heart. But I bump into something. I turn my head and see my rump against the wall. That is when I see that I’m big. I mean huge. These alphas, my mates, are over six foot six easily and I am bigger than that in this form. My human form. Well, I’m only five foot seven. “You want to go outside?” The kind one asks, and I am not sure if that is a good idea. So Pearl shakes her head no. The fewer people who know about me, the better. “Pearl, I think I would like my body back now, please.” I say to her and she chuckles but I don’t know how. “Imagine yourself in your human form and let the change happen. It will hurt but not as much as the first shift and each time we shift, it will be quicker and no longer painful.” She reassures me and I take a deep breath and close my eyes as I imagine how I look. My bones shrink, and I wince, and when I open my eyes, I’m standing before them both, fully dressed but not in a hospital gown. I’m in black leather pants, a black vest top and wearing knee-high black boots. The markings on my skin glow with the same iridescent colour as Pearl in her wolf form. Well, that is new. “Wow. Normal wolves can’t do that,” the kind one says with a smile on his face. “I’m Ajax, by the way, and Mr grump is Atlas. We are your mates and I know, given what has just happened, that you may want to reject us, and you would have every right to do that, but I beg you, please don’t. Let my knucklehead of a brother make it up to you.” Ajax pleads on his knees, and Pearl chuckles. “What do you say, Pearl? Should we give them a chance?” I ask her because my last mate deceived me, and that is still a gaping fresh wound. “They mean well, and the goddess has a plan so I say we should. But maybe make them sweat first.” She says with a chuckle. Pearl is evil when she wants to be and I smirk. “Ok, but first you need to know everything. I was not sent here as a spy. I was running for my life. They used me as a drug mule. They kept me complacent by promising to tell me about my parents. Alpha Fredrick told me everything last night that they killed my parents and …” I blink to stop the tears. When Atlas moves and hugs me, the tingles of the bond erupt everywhere on my exposed skin, and it is like a live wire. “I’m sorry, Pandora. You don’t need to tell us. I was a fool and blinded by my own past. Please only continue if you want to.” He says and I just blink. Can I trust him? He has just flipped that switch so easily. “He told me that his warriors took turns with my mother as my father’s head watched on with dead eyes before they killed her. I was supposed to die. I had one friend in that place. One and he betrayed me.” I say and Atlas tightens his hold on me. “Who was it that betrayed you?” He asks in a growl and I look up into green eyes. “Nathaniel. The alpha’s son. He was … He was my mate. He knew what they were doing. He knew what they did to my parents. Then, he rejected me in front of the pack. The same pack that treated me like a traitor, like I had some incurable contagious disease. He rejected me for the beta’s daughter Gemma. She was my biggest bully. They said I was weak. That I deserved what was happening because I am the daughter of traitors.” I say and I feel the tears fall. “No, they are the traitors. What do you know about your parents?” Ajax asks and I look over at him and shake my head. “That my mother was an omega and my father was a warrior. That during the war. They left. They left me in the care of the alpha and luna and ran away.” Because that is what they told me. But I now know it was all a lie. “Pandora. What do you know about the Bringer Of The Light Pack?” Ajax asks and I look at him confused and shake my head. “Only that the pack is a myth. That they held great power and were lost many years ago and no one knows how or why.” I tell him and he steps forward and takes my hands in his. “Pandora. The alpha and luna of The Bringer Of Light Pack, they were …” “They were what?” Please don’t say it. Please don’t say it. “They were your parents. They fought in that war. They fought to protect you. Alpha Malikai and luna Contessa Morningstar. But they were betrayed by their allies. It is said that your mother was a white wolf. That the goddess favoured your bloodline and that you are direct descendants of her. That only those from that line have the white wolf and with it certain gifts. It is said that your parents refused to use your mother’s gift for wealth and power, that is what started the war. They were drugged and subdued.” He says and I step back, and Pearl whimpers in my head and I shake my head. “Then I am not an omega. I am an alpha female. How much more do I have to endure for the lies and betrayal of the Blackfall’s? It was them. Wasn’t it? It was them who started the war? The allies who betrayed my family. All for power, greed. I need to be alone. Please, I need to go.” I say as I bolt out of the room and pass many people as they bow as I run with tears streaming down my face as I make my way outside. How much more heartache do I need to endure before I can be left to live in peace? “I can give you that peace. Together we can make them all suffer. Come to me.” The voice from the flames speaks, and I just run, shutting it out.
