The car was quiet, the low hum of the engine the only sound between them. Isabel sat with her arms folded across her chest, still processing the appointment. Her blouse clung a little tighter after the warm air of the clinic, and she could still feel the touch of gel across her stomach, even though it was long wiped away. But more than that, she could feel his presence. Isaac sat beside her like a shadow that refused to fade. She had seen it, the flick of his eyes whenever the doctor had spoken and the way his voice hardened at the end, the way his body shifted in small, tense movements.
