The car was too quiet. Isabel sat with her hands folded in her lap, fingers twisting over one another. She wasn't sure how long they'd been driving, but her nerves made every second feel slower than it should. Isaac sat next to her, legs crossed, one hand resting lazily on the armrest. His expression was unreadable, eyes forward, calm like always. But he kept glancing at her. He didn't say anything. Just shifted in his seat now and then, his eyes catching the way her knee bounced slightly, the way her thumb brushed her other palm in a small circle. She reached up to touch her necklace at one point, and he watched that too. She was trying to stay calm, trying not to think too hard about the flashing lights she knew were waiting outside. But her chest felt tight, her stomach unsettled.
