The Escape

The darkness was thick, but the shadows moving toward them were darker. The sound of heavy boots echoed down the hallway—purposeful, unyielding. Luna’s heart slammed against her ribs. Her fingers flared suddenly with heat, scorching the air as she clenched them. Ash’s breath was calm, steady. His skin shimmered faintly, an icy mist curling from his fingertips. “Ready?” he asked, voice low but certain. Luna nodded, swallowing the lump in her throat. --- The First Breach They darted down the corridor just as the door behind them burst open. A squad of operatives flooded in, faces hidden beneath masks, weapons drawn. Ash stepped forward, palms glowing with frost. The air instantly chilled—condensation forming on the walls. He exhaled sharply, sending a wave of ice crashing into the first wave of attackers. They stumbled back, slipping on the sudden frost. Luna’s fire erupted. Flames danced from her fingertips, licking the walls, forcing others to shield their faces. Together, they moved like a deadly dance — fire and ice intertwined, chaos and control. --- Heartbeats and Close Calls They reached the stairwell, but the fire alarm was blaring now, sprinklers flooding the floors. The wet air hissed where Luna’s flames met water, steam rising in swirling clouds. Ash’s frost held back the heat just enough to clear their path. They heard shouts behind them—reinforcements coming. Luna grabbed Ash’s arm. “This way!” They sprinted up the stairs, two steps at a time. Halfway up, a figure appeared at the landing—Viren. His smile was a blade in the dark. “Going somewhere?” he taunted. Ash didn’t hesitate. Frost wrapped around Viren’s ankles, freezing the ground. Viren snarled, breaking free, but it slowed him enough. Luna ignited a small blaze, blocking his path. Viren’s eyes gleamed. “You’re both reckless.” She gritted her teeth, stepping forward. “Better than waiting to be caged.” --- Breaking Through The rooftop door was locked. Luna’s flames heated the metal handle until it glowed red-hot. Ash’s ice cracked the lock mechanism. The door swung open. They burst onto the roof, gasping for fresh air. Below, city lights stretched endlessly. Ash pulled Luna close, scanning the perimeter. “Helicopters,” he muttered. “They’ve called in backup.” Luna’s wolf growled in her mind. “Let them come,” she said. “We’ve got fire and ice.” Ash smiled, a rare, soft curve. Together, they vanished into the night, two forces becoming one—ready to burn the world or freeze it to save themselves.
