The Mark of the Wild Flower

Prologue

Ellie POV

It is a sunny day today, I plead with mom if I could invite Phoebe over, I got a new doll yesterday and wanted to show it to her. My gran sent it to me for my 5th birthday last week. My birthday is next Monday, and mommy promised me this year I could have a party. Daddy doesn’t make a lot of money so I can’t invite many friends, but I can invite Phoebe and a few other friends. I asked for 5 friends. I am sitting at the kitchen table deciding who I wanted to invite. I really like Donna she always hangs with Phoebe, she’s 6 though so I don’t see her until after school when Phoebe and I walk home, and Donna joins us. Phoebe and Donna lives next to each other in the estate, but they never make fun of my small house. Phoebe always wants to come over here anyway.

Mom finally caves “Yes Ellie!” she laughs, I loved it when mommy laughs, it makes me happy. “But first tell me who I am going to address these invitations to.” She is very serious.

“Phoebe, duh, and Donna. I like her. And….” I see mom looking very annoyed.

“What did I say about that word Eleanor Denver? May I remind you that I am your mother!”

“I’m sorry!” I yell, but I am very sorry.

“Eleanor, don’t be difficult.” She sighs “Okay are there any boys you want to invite?”

“Phoebe’s boyfriend is cool; his name is Craig. We should invite him.” I smile

I could see my mom make that face, where her adultness comes in and she will start teasing me. I get slightly annoyed. “Oh, Phoebe has a boyfriend now, since when?”

“Well actually he is her fiancé. He asked her to marry him on Thursday. She said yes!” I inform my mom.

“Really? And when is the wedding?” My mom starts laughing.

“They haven’t chosen a day yet, mom!”

“Okay, calm down, I am just asking. Does Craig have a friend you want to invite?” She looks defeated. That’s right mom I win!

“Uh he is older than us, His name is Lucian Meridian. He is grade 1. He is so hot. He lives in the estate with them. I played at his house one day with Phoebe and Donna and Craig. Craig has a brother and his name is Fabian, he is more hot than Lucian. Lucian’s bestest friend is Fabian, but because Craig is Fabian’s brother, Lucian plays with Craig too.”

“okay darling I have not kept up with anything you just said. But no older boys okay.”

“Yes mom. Okay there is Tyler. He is cool!”

Phoebe answers her house’s phone, and I am excited to tell her about my doll.

“Cool I am coming. See ya!”

It took ten minutes and Phoebe was there.

We played the whole afternoon when my mom finally came in “Phoebe, honey, can I take you home? It’s late and we don’t want you to walk home in the dark?”

“It’s okay! Mom will be here soon!” She is always smiling. Her freckles and blue eyes make her look pretty.

Today is my party and everyone came. Tyler hasn’t stopped eating for 5 minutes. He likes eating. We swim, eat cake, and run around playing with the ball. Donna was quiet the whole time, but she laughed and played with us. When the sun finally starts setting, I walk with Phoebe home. Our moms arranged that I sleep over there.

We walk quickly as she said there is a surprise for me at her home. We suddenly stop at the entrance of the estate as we hear a loud snap behind us, we turn around quickly and right there, was a big black dog. He snarls and the spittle drops to the asphalt. He smells horrible. Phoebe screams and starts running and that only makes him angrier, and he pounces me. I feel a sudden sharp pain in my side and a burn start spreading over my body. I finally find my voice and start screaming. And then everything becomes dark.

Fabian POV

It’s been 2 weeks since that little girl was attacked by the wild dog outside the estate. She was screaming so loud; I don’t know what would’ve happen if Dad didn’t come home early from his trip. She would’ve probably died. Wild dogs are so unpredictable, and they bite us often, but we’re werewolves and we can survive it, but humans can’t. I sit in dad’s car worrying about this girl. I never even met her, but Craig knows her, he says she’s Phoebe’s best friend. Trust Phoebe to make friends with the humans.

“Fabian, don’t worry, it’s just another dog, he’s long gone, and Phoebe’s friend is okay, she is even going to school today,” He pauses to stop the car then he turns around in his seat to look at me. He speaks directly at me, like no-one else was in car. He hesitates before saying something. “Have a lovely day my boy!” I get out of the car along with Lucian and Craig.

Craig runs to Phoebe and sure enough that girl is standing there. She looks okay. I grab Lucian by his shirt and starts pulling him to the door as he yells good morning to Donna. Donna was always ignoring him, but his mom and her mom is best friends, so they know each other well. Lucian loves teasing Donna, but I suspect he’s fighting for her attention.

As we walked inside, I suddenly smell this intoxicating scent, it smells so good.

“Do you smell that?” I ask Lucian.

“Uh, what? I just smell Lika’s coffee.” Lika is my sister she is only 2 years older than I am, but she is always drinking coffee. I just roll my eyes at him. I also smell the coffee, Lika came to school on her bike today as she went over to the new girl’s house, Lottie Abrahams, Lika likes all the new kids.

“Fabian, could you please tell dad I have art this afternoon and I will take my bike home afterwards.” Lika is always avoiding the car. She says the leather makes her sick.

“Fine Lika” I smile. I always smile at her. Her long blonde hair, that she never combs, smells like apples, and there is always paint splatter on her clothes. Mom disapproves. Mom is a proper lady, fit to be a queen and the only royal quality about Lika is her favourite colour, royal blue. She loves drawing and painting and hates being girly, later I would start comparing her to the Hippies I see on TV.
