The Alpha Who Came to Claim Me

1282 Words
“Return my mate…” The words echoed through the Silver Mist Pack like a death sentence. No wolf moved. And no one breathed. Because every warrior standing outside the healer’s tent knew one thing: Alpha Kael Draven never made empty threats. And tonight, he was not coming as a rival Alpha. He was coming as a male whose mate had been stolen from him. “Impossible,” Alpha Rowan whispered. His eyes moved to me. Not with the warmth he had always shown me. or the affection of the man who had watched me grow up. But with fear. The same fear I had seen in every wolf who discovered the truth about me tonight. The same fear that said: You are not one of us. The realization hurt more than I expected. I had survived enemy wolves. I had discovered my entire life was a lie. I had found a mate among the people I was raised to hate. Yet the thing that broke me was the way my own pack looked at me like a stranger. “Aria.” Luna Lyla reached for me weakly. Her voice trembled. “Please understand. We only wanted to protect you.” I stepped back. Her hand froze in the air. The woman who had tucked me into bed every night, who called me daughter. The woman I crossed enemy territory to save. She had looked me in the eyes for twenty years and hidden the truth. “Protect me?” I whispered. Tears filled her eyes. “Yes.” “By lying to me?” “Aria—” “By letting me believe I was cursed?” My voice cracked. A painful silence filled the tent. No one answered. Because they all knew the truth. They had all watched while the other wolves whispered behind my back. The cursed girl. The strange girl. The one who never truly belonged. And no one had told me why. Another howl shook the earth. Closer this time. The torches outside flickered violently. A warrior burst into the tent. His face was pale. “Alpha Rowan!” Rowan turned. “What is it?” “The Shadow Moon Pack has breached the outer border.” Gasps filled the room. “That’s impossible,” another warrior said. “Our barriers should hold them.” The warrior swallowed. “They did.” Everyone went still. “What do you mean?” His voice shook. “They walked through them.” Fear spread through the room like poison. The protective barriers of Silver Mist had been blessed by the Moon Goddess herself. No enemy had crossed them in two hundred years. Until Kael. I felt it. The bond. The closer he came, the stronger it became. His anger. His desperation. His need to find me. It crashed against my soul like a storm. My wolf stirred. Go to him. “No.” The word escaped before I could stop it. Every head turned toward me. I clenched my fists. I would not run into the arms of a man I had known for less than an hour. I did not care that my heart raced when I thought of him. I did not care that his pain felt like my own. I was not some prize to be claimed. A cold smile appeared on Riven’s face. “Interesting.” I looked at him. “What?” “The bond is already affecting you.” My blood ran cold. “You know nothing about my bond.” “Actually, I know everything.” The room fell silent. My eyes narrowed. “What do you mean?” Riven looked almost regretful. “The prophecy never said the Moonborn princess would simply unite the packs.” Something dark entered his expression. “It said she would awaken the Alpha who could either save the world…” His eyes moved toward the door. “Or destroy it.” The entire camp shook. A powerful roar exploded outside. Not a wolf. Not entirely. Something older. Something ancient. Every wolf in the room dropped to one knee. Even Alpha Rowan. Even Riven. Only I remained standing. Because whatever power had entered the valley… it was calling to me. The tent entrance ripped open. A massive black wolf stepped through the smoke. His fur was darker than midnight. His golden eyes burned like fire. The Beast of Shadow Moon. Alpha Kael Draven. A monster every child had been taught to fear. But the moment his eyes found me— the monster disappeared. Pain replaced his rage. Relief replaced his violence. He shifted instantly. The room looked away out of respect as he covered himself with a cloak handed to him by one of his warriors. Then he walked toward me. Slowly. Like I might vanish. “Are you hurt?” That was his first question. Not: Why did you leave? Not: Why did you run? Not: Why didn’t you come to me? His first concern was me. And somehow that terrified me more. “No.” His shoulders lowered slightly. As though he had been holding the weight of the world. “You invaded my territory,” Rowan growled. Kael did not even look at him. “She is my mate.” The words were simple. Final. A declaration. My heart betrayed me with a painful ache. I hated that it affected me. I hated that I liked hearing it. “I am not an object,” I snapped. The entire room went silent. Several Shadow Moon warriors looked horrified. No one spoke to Kael Draven that way. No one. But he only looked at me. And to my surprise… he smiled. A real smile. Small. Almost sad. “There she is.” My breath caught. “What?” “The girl who stood in my forest and challenged a monster.” The tenderness in his voice made my chest tighten. “I have waited my entire life to meet you.” “Enough.” Riven stepped forward. His claws extended. “You are not taking her.” Kael’s expression changed instantly. The warmth vanished. The Beast returned. “Do not test me.” Riven laughed. “You think I fear you?” “No.” Kael’s eyes glowed. “I know you should.” The ground trembled. The air became difficult to breathe. Every wolf felt his dominance. Every wolf except me. Because my power rose to meet his. Silver light erupted from my skin. The mark on my wrist burned. A symbol appeared in the air above us. A crescent moon wrapped around a wolf’s crown. Everyone stared. Terrified. Reverent. Riven’s face turned white. “No…” “What is happening?” I whispered. His lips trembled. “The prophecy…” The tent exploded. A figure dressed in black descended from the smoke. Their eyes glowed red. Not wolf nor human. Something else. And they looked directly at me. At the mark. At the bloodline they had failed to erase. “The Moonborn heir has awakened.” Kael stepped in front of me immediately. His claws emerged. His eyes turned pure gold. “Touch her…” The stranger smiled. And for the first time that night— Kael looked afraid. “After all these years,” the stranger whispered. “We have finally found the daughter of the First Alpha.” The world stopped. My heart stopped. The First Alpha. Not a descendant. Not a princess. A daughter. A being who should have died centuries ago. And the stranger’s smile widened. “Come with us willingly, Aria.” Their red eyes glowed brighter. “Or we will slaughter everyone you have ever loved.
