She remembered the day in the coffee shop, the man had had sunglasses on and only taken them off whilst eating, Leila had not been able to see his eyes. Now she was mesmerized by them.
"I didn't hear much" Leila murmered, "I only heard something about a ship coming in two weeks" she said honestly. "Hmm" the man grumbled, wondering whether to believe her or not, by the look on his face he decided on the first option. "This might sound strange, but I have a feeling I know you from somewhere" the man said. "but I can't quite recall where I could know you from, would you mind telling me your name?" He asked politely.
Leila smiled, he remembered her, even if he didn't know where from, but he did remember her! She didn't know why, but for some reason this made her feel some sort of warmth towards him. "I'm Leila," she said hesitantly "I work at the coffee shop 'cups and spoons', I think you came in there last week.." she trailed off.
"Aahh yes now I remember, you were one of the waitresses there." The man nodded.
Suddenly there was a loud bang. "What was that?" Leila asked. "Leila, I think it's better if you go home now." The man replied without answering her question. Leila didn't feel like it was the right time or place to start questioning this man. She did what he said and got up. "Ok, then bye" she called over her shoulder, the man was walking in the opposite direction and didn't turn back to face her. Suddenly there was another bang, this one was much louder than the last, the man fell down, clutching his leg, cursing. Without thinking Leila ran up to him: "Are you ok? Should I call an ambulance?" She asked him frantically. "I told you to leave!" the man shouted at her. "Do you want to get killed?!"
Suddenly it dawned on Leila that the loud bangs must have been gun sh*ts. "Don't just stand there! Go now!" He ordered whilst getting up painfully. He pulled a g*n out of his jacket and started to look for the sh**ter whilst limping forwards slowly. Laila looked at the blood gushing out of the large man's leg and walked up to him carefully. "I can call an ambulance, you know" she offered kindly. "Why the f*ck are you still here! I don't need an ambulance get yourself home! Now!" The man said firmly. "I'm not leaving you here on your own" Leila blurted out without thinking twice. "Fine, then stay, but keep yourself out of the way!" The man ordered, pushing Leila behind him.
After a few minutes the sh**ter could not be seen nor heard. The large man turned around to Leila, "My guys must have got him" he muttered under his breath. Leila looked at him silently. He limped to the bench, sat down, took his coat off and ripped off a piece of his tshirt. Then he tied the piece of cloth around his leg.
"What are you looking at?" He finally asked gruffly. Leila was still terrified of him, but she plucked up the courage and spoke "I don't live far from here, it's only a few minutes walk, I have bandages at home, I could help you, if you like?" The man didn't react, he took his phone out of his pocket and looked at the screen "sh*t, it's dead" he observed angrily. Then he looked at Leila, "you have a phone?" He asked. Leila nodded and reached into her bag. She passed him her phone, he typed in a number and made a call "It's me.. yes, I'm fine.. I was hardly hit.. Take him away and find out who he's working for, I'll be back in a couple of hours." He hung up and winced trying to get up. Leila ran over to him. "Hang on I'll help you." She offered. The man smiled. This tiny woman wants to help a massive man like me, he thought, laughing silently.
Once they got to Leila's house, Leila asked him to wait, she knew the stairs would be too much for him in his state and brought her first aid kit downstairs. "Take off your trousers please" she asked respectfully. The man smiled and shook his head, normally he would of been the one asking her to take her trousers off for him. But alas this little lady was so polite, he pushed the his dirty thoughts out of his head and untied his leg, whilst slipping out of his trousers.
Leila desinfected the wound, pulled out the bullet and bandaged his leg up, the man didn't wince or curse once, it seemed to Leila like he was somehow used to this happening.
Afterwards the large man looked up from his bandaged leg "I'm Vitus, by the way, but you can call me Viv, all my friends do."
"Hi Vitus, I'm Leila" Leila said, face palming herself inwardly. "Well, you knew that, of course." Leila blushed, Vitus smiled. "Can I borrow your phone again?" He asked, he made a call and told someone to pick him up, a few silent minutes later Vitus' driver turned up in a black Mercedes. "Anyway thanks for bandaging me up, maybe next time, you can tell me about that kidnapping thing?" Vitus asked. Leila looked surprised, what did he mean by next time, she wondered, but before she could ask, Vitus climbed into the car and was driven off down the road.
Leila packed up her first aid kit and carried it upstairs to her appartment.
