Chapter Nine: Temporarily Haywire

1144 Words
A week later... As he launched a sidekick, I stepped back and quickly dodged it. After that, I noticed that, like some people, he also had the habit of copying other people's movements after seeing them.       It’s time to end this! After rocking back and forth, I stepped back suddenly and then lunged forward, making him do the same thing. When he did this, I put my full power in my feet and attacked. I felt my foot connected on his face and BAM! He went down like a fly. I was still trying to catch my breath from the last attack as they announced my victory. I heard applause and cheering. That was when I glanced up and looked around. Then an arm suddenly grabbed me. I almost punched his face for startling me. Thankfully, I recognized the referee’s face before I could even lift my hand.      “Winner, Hunter Pendigram!” he declared to everyone. The crowd continued cheering, and some even called my name. Finally, I got my black belt. After a while, I stepped back and went outside, exhaling the fresh air and smiling after winning that match.      “Nice going there, bro!” A voice suddenly said behind my back, startling me. This time, I didn’t get the chance to stop myself. I launched a hefty punch towards my back, but the surprising part was that he quickly deflected it and held my hand still.      “So this is how you thank people for congratulating you, now? Whoo! I guess I shouldn’t do it anymore,” he smirked.      “You startled me, dumbass! You know that I’m still on edge after my fight, so it’s not my fault that I almost broke your nose!” I told him defensively. I was impressed that he blocked my punch easily. He also competed for his black belt today, and he easily won. I guess we were evenly matched when it came to fighting.      “Yeah, it’s my fault now that I sneak behind you. I saw that you almost punch the ref’s face earlier." He laughed like it was the funniest thing in the world. "Glad you didn’t because that would've disqualified you. You did so well. I think that kid you knock out is still in the infirmary,” he said.      “Right…I heard that the kid who went against you has a broken ankle and c***k ribs after you used you to beat him up. It’s your ultimate technique after all, and I’m SURE that you didn’t c***k his ribs INTENTIONALLY!” I emphasized loudly and firmly. I saw his grin widened after that.       This guy’s a murderer! He should be in jail for being this wild.      “It’s not my problem that the kid enjoyed my punches and kicks so much. He still wanted more, but I’m just too bored to play with him,” he said, laughing out loud.      “Dude, that's messed up," I told him. "I’m sure that kid will be traumatized after tasting your kicks,” I said to him, laughing. Is it cruel to laugh to someone when they’re hurt? I guess so, but it just felt fine to laugh about it. I stopped suddenly about that thought and frowned. Nick noticed this and stopped laughing as well.      “What’s wrong, man? Gone to La la land again? You know, if there’s a male version of Alice, you’re definitely going to be it. Your mind is always flying everywhere lately. Now that I think about it, Hunter in Wonderland is not that bad. The movie sucks though, great graphics and all, but the story is just so plain. What the hell? Now, I’m discussing some movie with you. Something weird is always happening to me when I’m around you, I swear,” he muttered, looking at me. I guess he really wanted to know what I was thinking, but I didn’t tell him. He might get hurt if he knew.      “Nothing is wrong, bro! And don’t make fun of my name. If I’m the male version of Alice, then you’re like one of those blue monkeys in the Avatar movie. I was shocked when they didn’t hire you for that job. You’re completely suited for it. You don't even need a costume!” I joked at him, attempting to sound cheerful.      “Whatever!” He snorted. Then we fell into silence and started walking in the direction of my house. After a few minutes, Nick broke it again, and this time, his question surprised me. “Hey! I forgot to ask you the other day about something. When we were in the club, did you notice a girl with black hair, golden eyes, and a very sexy body? She definitely would've stood out in a crowd. I know that you would've easily noticed her with those eyes of yours,” he said.       “Why is that? Is she your new girlfriend or something?" I replied. I almost told him about Rizza, but I felt that something weird was going on, so I tried to milk some information first. I better play this by ear.      “It would be great to have a girlfriend who looks better than a supermodel, but it’s actually more of the something part that I’m looking for her. She owes me something,” he explained. I felt that Nick just switched into his serious mode.      “She owes you something? What does she owe you? Money?” I asked. I wished I didn’t sound so suspicious.      “Kind of. It’s more than that, but it's somewhat complicated to explain. So, did you see happen to see her the other night?” he asked again, this time giving me the look of “Don’t-lie-to-me-or-you’re-dead.” It didn’t affect me, though. His answer was very evasive and raised more questions than provided answers.       “Sexier than a supermodel. Blue eyes. Long Black hair. Hmm…Nope, don't remember seeing anyone like that,” I told him innocently. I could be a terrific liar when I wanted to be. I had the best poker face in the universe if I say so myself.      “I see. Well, I need to go somewhere, so maybe I'll see you around later? Message me if you see anyone around that looks like her. Her payment is overdue, and I've grown tired of waiting,” he said and waved, then took off running before I could even say anything. For a while, I stood there, thinking what the connection between Nick and Rizza could be or if it was even really Rizza that he was looking for. I wasn't sure. Maybe I was just mistaken, and they didn’t have any connection at all.       Anyway, I just had my promotion today, so I should celebrate, I thought.  It was the biggest fight of my life so far, but I never expected it to be nothing compared to the one that followed. One other thing that bothered me: Nick waved at me again.
