When I stepped out of the room, my eyes widened in shock from the thing that unfolded before my eyes. It seemed like it was the day for everyone in town to get their check ups. The hospital hall was full of people and I couldn’t identify who was who in the crowd anymore. The nurses were making their way through the thick crowd and they were all wearing a frown in their faces. I heard shouting and crying everywhere which really horrified me. What the hell was going on?
When a nurse walked in front of me, I stopped her and asked what was happening but what reply did I get? “I got many things to do and if you’re not here to have a needle injected in any part of your body, then I will suggest that you don’t bother me.” They really had a bad day, I nodded at myself. Guess I would try asking the people; maybe they would be much nicer.
I looked around to see if I know someone in here and saw Mr. Henderson, or as he liked me to call him, “Captain H”, because he said that he wanted to be a pirate when he was a young kid. His house was just close to mine so we see each other from time to time. After a few “excuse me’s” and “sorry”, I finally reached where he was standing near the corner of the hall. I noticed that he was alone, or maybe his companions were in one of the rooms or in the cafeteria.
I stood in front of him and greeted him. “Hey, Captain H. What are you doing here?”
He frowned for a few seconds and his eyes narrowed as if trying to remember if he knew me then his eyes widened. “Hunter, how are you doing boy? What brought you here?” Before I could even answer, he continued. “I’m here because Reil got sick suddenly today. He’s inside with his dad.” Reil is Mr. Henderson’s grandson.
“Really? What do you mean suddenly got sick?” I asked him curiously.
He shook his head and replied, “Well, you see, Reil was really fine yesterday morning. He was running and doing the usual stuff kid’s do but when the noon came, he had this high fever and he was moaning and crying calling for his mom. You know that Miria died two years ago so I was really devastated because my poor boy was calling his lost mom. We thought it was just normal fever so we only called the doctor, asking what to do. The doctor gave us a list on what was going to heal him but...” his eyes suddenly turned stormy. “His fever didn’t go down. It became worse this morning so we immediately rushed him into the hospital. He still hasn’t woken up yet. I’m really praying that he’s okay. He’s just a child,” he said, raising his voice. I looked around to see if anyone was looking and what did I found? Everyone was eavesdropping.
I turned back to Mr. Henderson’s lonely and angry face. “Don’t worry Captain H, he will be okay,” I told him, making a small smile.
He looked in my eyes with full of hope and I needed to fight the urge to grimace because I wasn't sure if his grandson would be really okay. I realized that I shouldn’t say things that I didn’t have control over with.
He placed his hand of my shoulder and said with a smile that never reached his eyes. “Thank you, Hunter. You’re a good boy,” patting my shoulder.
I nodded at him and decided to take my leave. “Well, I better get going then Captain H. I will stop by later to see how Reil is doing,” he nodded then and I walked off. I felt bad not only for the people that were sick today but to the families and friends that were worrying about them. I rushed to the elevator and when the bell dings, I walked directly towards the hospital’s front desk.
I leaned to it and saw the nurse busy scribbling. “Hey, Nurse,” I called her and when she looked up, I started explaining. “Well, you see, I’m really fine now so I’m here to check out myself. I’m not dizzy or even have a single illness in my body,” I told her, smiling.
She falsely smiled and said, “Did you talk to your doctor about this? Did they said that you’re okay to go now?” she responded flatly. Somebody surely hates her job!
“No. I don’t even know who the hell my doctor is. Please nurse, just let me go. I got many things to do,” I told her, making a sad face.
She just smiled again and replied, “Well, so do I. If you haven’t talked to your doctor about this, then you can turn around and go back to your room while I will continue saving the world with my records. I’m really busy, so shoo!” then she sat down again and continued writing.
Finding no way out, I resorted to my last card which was for only desperate reasons. “Too bad. You have so many patients here and you’re turning away an opportunity to give one of them a room. Well, I guess I’ll get going then,” I said to her, shaking my head. I started walking but her call stopped me. BINGO!
I looked back at her scowling and very thoughtful face. I got her now. “I’ll make a deal with you. You check me out; I won’t tell anyone that it’s you. Or if that doesn’t work, then I will tell about this to my dad. Is that good enough?” arching my brows.
She looked down for a second then nodded with a scowl. “Fine. I can’t let a person who’s well enough to bargain like the devil to stay in a room for a sick patient when there’s a roomful of people waiting to lie down on that bed. You just need to promise to head straight home and tell your dad about this,” she said and when I nodded. She started clicking the computer. She gave me sheets to sign and done, I was free!
I walked outside whistling when a car swerved in the sideways, that was when I noticed that everything was wrong. I started running but I was minutes too late. There was already another car stopping in the direction I was heading. I could always used my karate skills but they were all carrying guns and they were big .Shit, I was cornered. With nowhere to go, the only thing that I could do was hope for my family and friends to be safe.
That was when they grabbed me. I totally f****d up.
