Chapter 13: Learn how to live

1560 Words
"What were you guys talking about?" He finally asked the two teens as soon as they finished fixing their things. The two looked at each other before confronting the agent, "Nothing big agent." Sage said, "I should get going as well, it'll be dark soon" She added as she attempted to walk past the two but was then stopped by the Agent. "Where do you live? Maybe we could give you a ride. It's getting late and it's dangerous for anyone to be walking alone at night, especially you two. Under the circumstances that happened today I don't think it's a good idea to go home alone." He suggested. Sage nodded, "I understand, I live at Parton St. 3rd Block." she said. "That's quite near our place. We'll drive you. Let's go." Daexoen suddenly intervened. "If it's not an inconvenience, then I would gladly take up on the offer."  They soon left the room, nearing the end of the hall they caught a glimpse of the owner, cleaning up the counter. There weren't as many people in the cafe as when they first arrived there, but there were still quite a few. Not packed but still a lot. "Greg" Agent Brook called out to him. Greg looked up to see the trio, "Hey, Going home already? It is quite late. Thanks for stopping by today." he enthusiastically said. "Yes, uncle. Thank you for the accommodation. We're sorry we didn't brought out the plates" Daexoen said Greg let out a small chuckle, "It's fine I'll just clean it up later, better yet I'll have the whole room cleaned for the next time you'll come by."  The two were surprised with the sudden offer, "No, that's alright uncle. We don't want to be a bother." Daexoen turned down.  He looked at them with disapproving looks, "I insist, no one's using the room anyway and given what happened today I think it's best you have a room here."  The agent raised his eyebrow, "Today? Why? What happened?" Agent Brook asked "Wasn't anything serious, but everyone kept looking at them and started to take pictures. If those two didn't suggest having a room, I would have given them one myself." Greg joked earning a soft chuckle from the other males and a grin from the female Sage looked at the owner and gave a small bow, "We really appreciate the offer sir. The coffee was great, thank you for letting us use your spare office, hope we weren't an inconvenience to you." she politely told him.  "Please call me uncle Greg since you've gotten quite close to Daexoen here." He said as he wrapped his arm around Daexoen's shoulders. "And it was my pleasure, consider it as thanks for boosting my cafe's popularity." he added.  "Well, I shouldn't keep you longer. It's getting quite dark. Be careful on your way home." Greg continued before patting Daexoen's back. "See you later bud, take care." Agent Brook said, giving his friend a short bro hug before gesturing the two teens to the parking lot.  As they reach the car, Daexoen made sure Sage entered the back seat first holding the door for her before settling down on the passenger's seat next to his uncle. The inside of the car grew silent as they drove their way to the girl's house. It wasn't awkward, just silent. However, the same can't be said for Agent Brook's, when thoughts and questions spiral around his mind. He can't help but wonder what the three students were talking about back at the cafe, not to mention the incident that happened at the station. There were so many things happening in just one day and he just couldn't keep up. "I--" he started, immediately the attention of the two were placed on him, waiting for the next words that'll be released from his mouth. "I'm sorry about what happened at the station. You guys were a big help but-" he paused for a moment as he suddenly remembered the embarrassment and guilt that happened just this afternoon. Understanding the Agent's intent for the conversation, Sage decided to continue the conversation. "It's fine. We didn't really take it to heart. But I stand by what I've said Agent, I'm willing to help if you'd let me and leave it be if you don't. I don't like engaging in anything but if you really need me then I'll try" Sage frankly answered. The agent nodded, unaware if the female might or might not have noticed, "I understand and I'm extremely grateful for the help and assistance and I will not deny the fact that you both have talent and knowledge to help, even solve this case. But I also don't want you guys to be in danger and what happened this morning is an example of how dangerous this could be for your lives. You both are just students, you have a lot ahead of you, and you being involved in this case could rapture that future of yours. You can lose your own life but I can't also deny that we need your help in this case. Both of your help." he sincerely told them. No one said anything next. They both knew that he was right. Their lives and even the lives of their loved ones are in danger. They are only teenagers, they aren't as skillful and knowledgeable as the agents in this case. Let's say they are a big help with the case, they could also be a big weight to the agents. The others will be obliged to protect them and with that they'll have less time to do their actual work. But if they don't help, would they really catch the killer? Sage however, noticed they were just 3 houses away from theirs. She instructed the agent to stop in front of their porch. As soon as the teen got off, the agent was about to start the car once again when the other suddenly started to say something. "I admit, you are right. We might lose our life especially if we are only teenagers. But like I said Agent Brook, I am willing to help, I don't really care if I'd lose my life, because unfortunately, I don't have anything to stay alive for" she said, her back facing the two, unable to see her face. "Goodnight, I'll see you on Monday Daexoen" she said, continuously walking towards the comfort of her home, not even sparing a glance at the two. This struck the two with complete confusion, they stare at the closed door of the house. They grow silent as they both leave, words of the females still linger in their minds. Little did they know that lurking in the dark of the front house's garden, Sage's aunt had been the entire time. Unfortunately, she heard everything the young female said. Her heart almost breaks hearing those exact words from the younger. She timidly walks into the house, wearing a deep frown, eyes filled with glistening tears threatened to flow down at any minute. She timidly sat down on one of the chairs in the living room still trying to hold back the pain she tried so hard to keep. It was one thing to see her niece so out of it- so alone that even when you're beside her it feels that she's just too far to reach. It was different from just feeling or assuming than actually hearing her. "Is your life really that useless for you Sage? When will you start to fear for your own life? When will you start to feel life? Where here, I'm here. We're a family but why- why is it, even for us you don't want to live?" she thought deeply. She didn't notice the door opening, "Mom? Are you crying? What happened?" Her newly arrived son asked. She jumps at the sudden contact from her son. She didn't notice that the tears she tried to keep were already flowing down her cheeks until he swipes it off. she tried to give a small smile, "I'm fine. I just heard a very sad story. You know me always the little drama." she tried to joke as she wiped her tear-stained face. Although he wasn't convinced he decided to not push his mother into confession, "You should go and take a quick shower, then call your cousin so we could have dinner" she ordered as she stood up from her chair. he reluctantly held onto the staircase handle, "Mom, are you sure you're alright?" he asked again. she nodded a couple of times, "Of course, go on now. I'll just prepare the table. Your father is on his way already." She answered, entering the kitchen to avoid other questions. "Okay, we'll be down in a bit" She heard him said followed by footsteps slowly disappearing as her son went to his room. As she started to prepare the dinner table, her eye caught the attention of a small picture frame in their kitchen counter. It was their first picture with Sage after taking the younger in- before her parents' accident. She held the frame before gently caressing her niece's picture, "I'll wait for that day, Sage. I know that day will come. I know one day, you'll learn how to live." she said, almost in a whisper.
