Fear. That is all that Elspeth Ross could feel in the moment. How had seven months with the father of her 2 year old son come to this? Laying under his weight, her vision becoming pinpoints surrounded by darkness, she had only one thought,
'Oh God, he's killing me.'
The pressure of his hands around her throat seemed to get heavier and more intense. The pain in her abdomen was unbearble. She never saw the knife he used. She could feel the moment her eardrum ruptured and could barely hear her roommate, Audrey scream for him to get off of her.
"What the f**k are you doing, Kevin!?", Audrey shrieked. "You are killing the mother of your child! Shes bleeding, and he sees what you're doing you f*****g bastard!"
All of a sudden Elspeth's sight and sound began to come back as she was able to gasp for precious gulps of air. He had released her from his death grip. Her soundless sobs wracked her battered body between desperate breaths. She could hear the struggle ensuing from the other side of the doorway between Audrey and Kevin, and her adrenaline kicked in suddenly. She screamed out with what voice she had,
"Where is Connor?! Where's my baby boy?!"
She could barely stand to try to find him, and thankfully she did not have to go far. Two year old Connor was toddling his way to her arms as fast as his small legs would carry him. He had his arms spread out for her to wrap him into the safety of her embrace.
"Mommy okay? Him hurt mommy?" As he held her swollen and bruised face in his tiny hands.
"Mommy will be okay, sweet boy," she replied, but deep down she was horrified and had no idea what to do.
"Connor," she said as she wiped his tears. "I need you to be brave. We," she pointed to him and herself,"have to leave here baby."
"Okay, Mommy. I scared." He said in his sweet, tiny voice.
Elspeth held her son tightly as she gathered the small amount of physical strength she had left and searched for a way out of the house without his father seeing her intention. Making her way to Connor's bedroom, she grabbed a bag from his closet and threw as many of his clothes, toys and diapers as she could fit into it. Once it was fastened closed, she listened carefully to determine where Kevin and Audrey were. The yelling and sounds of glassware and small appliances breaking determined that they were in the kitchen. Good. That gave her a direct escape route through the office and foyer to the front door. On her way out she grabbed her purse, her phone and a file that read, 'Order of Protection and Safe Houses', and ran, with her boy in her arms until she could not breathe.
She had made it far enough from the house that she was able to pull her phone from her purse and dial 911.
"911 dispatch," said the male voice on the other end of the line. "What is your emergency?"
"I need help!" She replied in hoarse words. "My sons father just tried to kill me. My roommate distracted him, and I was able to run with my little boy, but he's BEATING the hell out of her right now!"
"Alright miss. I need you to stay as calm as you can and give me the address where this is happening. Also, are you in a safe location? Where exactly are you so we can send an officer and E.M.S.?"asked the gentleman.
Elspeth, panicking, replied, "The address where he is, is 11457 Fairview Lane. I am about a mile away. I only know I ran West, toward the mountain. Please hurry!"
"Ma'am, I need you to slow down and breathe. Are you injured?" Asked the dispatcher.
"Yes," she said, "He strangled me until my vision went away, and my right ear is bleeding!"
" Alright, Ma'am," he said, "Officers are on their way to the locations you gave me. Please stay on the line with me until they get to you. You mentioned there was a child involved?"
"Yes," Elspeth replied, " My son, Connor. He's two and was struck in the face by his father. I do not believe he is severely injured but he has a black eye beginning to show."
The dispatcher sucked in a deep breath, and replied. "What is your name, if I may ask? It may help to calm you if you hear your name from someone not trying to harm you."
"Elspeth. Please, how long til they're here?" She said just as she heard sirens.
"Well, Elspeth," came that soothing voice from the phone, she knew from the way he spoke that he was sincere. "I hear the sirens, they should be to you soon. Ma'am, you will be safe. I swear. They won't let him get to you. They just confirmed that they have 4 units at the residence he attacked you at, and a unit and ambulance almost to you. Hang in there okay?"
Just as he said, 'okay' she saw the lights of the police cruiser, and collapsed with Connor in her arms. She did not lose consciousness, but came very close. When the emergency personnel got her onto the gurney, the first of the two E.M.T.'s gasped when he saw her face.
"Is it really that bad? He has hurt me before, but this time i cant feel half of my face." Elspeth said.
Connor was in tears and would not let his mommy go. "Daddy hurt Mommy! Connor see it!"he said. "I stay with Mommy!"
The second E.MT. came to her, and looked her in the eye, and she went suddenly dazed. Somehow she knew those eyes! Her heart raced to a different beat now. She wanted to be soothed, and comforted by this man and she did not like it.
"I need you to look at the light darlin'," he said. "You have a nasty contusion over that eye that needs a cleanin up. You should probably know, your right eye is red from blood vessels breaking. The officer informed us of what you explained to dispatch, which definitely shows as factual from how battered you are. Okay now, I've put a couple butterfly closures on the brow that is split. The officer needs to speak with you before we take you and your son to the hospital to be seen."
When he spoke, his voice made her feel warm and cared for. His deep, slow Texas accent about did her in. He sounded a lot like her dad. She had to rip her eyes away when the officer approached her.
"Hello Miss Ross," said the officer. "My name is Tina Hawthorne. I am an officer with Auburn P.D.. We thought it would be best if a female officer spoke to you. We have apprehended your assailant. What is his full name?"
"Kevin Treacle, Ma'am." She replied immediately, choking on the name as if it could poison her.
"Your physical condition corresponds with the report given to dispatch. Do you need to go to the hospital?"
"Yes, i think I do, Officer Rossi. He beat me over and over and r***d me in front of my boy, then strangled me until I couldn't see or hear. I am so scared he will finish me off if he gets to me!"
"Miss Ross, you need to stay calm, said the short, bit thick female officer Hawthorne. "While the medics were checking you over, I was contacted by the officers on the scene. You need to know what has happened. We have Mr. Treacle in custody. Ms.Williams is dead Ma'am."
Upon hearing those words, Elspth did lose consciousness...
