chapter 2

Since waking up, Kelly couldn’t stop thinking about that dream. She had tried to move on. She had focused on her work, put away a few books at the bookstore, and chatted with customers like she always did. But nothing worked. That woman kept coming back to her mind. Her red eyes. Her sad gaze. The way she had said Kelly’s name, as if she had waited years before finally being able to speak it. It was ridiculous. Kelly knew that. She didn’t even know that woman. So why did she have this strange feeling that she had met her before? No matter how hard she tried to find a logical explanation, none of them made any sense. Since her mother’s death, many things had changed. She slept badly, was often distracted, and sometimes felt like a part of her life was slipping away from her. That evening, after finishing work, she decided to go see Sarah. She needed to talk. Even if she didn’t know exactly what she wanted to say. --- “You look terrible.” Those were the first words Sarah said when she opened the door. Kelly rolled her eyes. “Thanks. It’s nice to see you too.” Sarah smiled slightly and let her in. “I’m serious, Kelly. You have dark circles all the way down to your chin.” Kelly placed her bag on the living room table. “I’ve just been sleeping badly lately.” Sarah crossed her arms. She knew her friend too well to believe that answer. “Since your mother died, you always say the same things. ‘I’m fine,’ ‘I’m okay,’ ‘Don’t worry.’” She stepped closer gently. “But I can see that it’s not true.” Kelly remained silent. She hated that Sarah was right. She missed her mother every single day. There were still moments when she grabbed her phone to call her before remembering that she would never answer again. But there was something else. Things she couldn’t explain. “I found something among her belongings,” she finally said. Sarah’s face became more serious. “What?” Kelly took the envelope out of her bag. The old letter. The one she had never opened. Sarah gently took it between her fingers. As soon as she saw the symbol on it, her expression changed. “Kelly…” “What?” Sarah looked at the black moon drawn on the paper. “Where did you find this?” “In my mother’s belongings. Why?” Sarah remained silent for a few seconds. “I don’t know.” She placed the letter down. “But this symbol makes me uncomfortable.” Kelly frowned. “Are you sure you’ve never seen it before?” Sarah was about to answer when a noise coming from the window interrupted them. A soft c***k. Like someone had stepped outside. The two young women immediately turned around. Kelly walked closer to the glass. The street was empty. Only the trees moved with the wind. “Did you hear that?” she asked. Sarah slowly nodded. “Yes.” A strange silence filled the room. Kelly stared outside. She couldn’t see anyone. Yet, she had that unpleasant feeling of being watched. As if someone was waiting in the shadows. --- At the same moment, in the Blackwood forest, Jasmine walked between the trees. She didn’t need any light. She had known this forest for centuries. Every sound, every scent, every movement was familiar to her. But this night was different. Her heart, which she believed was incapable of feeling certain emotions after four hundred years, was restless. She was close. She could feel it. Kelly was here. For centuries, Jasmine had imagined their reunion. She had imagined her smile. Her voice. The way she might recognize her. But now that the moment was truly approaching, a strange fear took hold of her. What if Kelly didn’t remember? What if she had forgotten everything? What if, to her, Jasmine was nothing more than a stranger? The vampire queen who made her enemies tremble was afraid of only one thing. Being rejected by the only person she had never stopped loving. Then she stopped. Her gaze lifted. She had felt it. Kelly was very close. After leaving Sarah’s house, Kelly decided to walk home. The night air was cool. The city was quiet. Too quiet. She walked slowly, lost in her thoughts, when she noticed something strange. The moon. It seemed different. Its light had a dark red color that gave the nearby forest an unsettling appearance. Kelly slowed down. Without knowing why, she felt a shiver run through her. Then a sound behind her. She turned around quickly. No one. “Stop being paranoid…” she whispered to reassure herself. She continued walking. But a few seconds later, someone appeared in front of her. A woman. Tall. Elegant. With long black hair gently moving in the wind. Kelly stopped instantly. Her breath caught. She knew that face. It was impossible. But it was her. The woman from her dreams. “You…” The woman looked at her as if she had been waiting for this moment her entire life. Then she softly said: “Kelly White.” Just hearing her name from her lips sent a shiver through Kelly’s body. “How do you know my name?” The woman slowly stepped closer. “Because I have been searching for you for a very long time.” Kelly took a small step back. She should have been afraid. Yet, she couldn’t bring herself to leave. “Who are you?” The woman remained silent. Then she answered: “Jasmine Anderson.” That name awakened something inside Kelly. A strange feeling. Like a hidden memory buried deep within her soul. “Have we met before?” she asked in a weak voice. Jasmine’s gaze darkened. “Yes.” She paused. “But not in this life.” Kelly didn’t have time to ask another question. A scream suddenly echoed through the forest. Jasmine’s expression changed instantly. All softness disappeared from her eyes. She had sensed a presence. Someone was approaching. “You have to leave.” Kelly frowned. “Why?” Jasmine stepped in front of her. “Because they know you have returned.” A movement could be heard among the trees. A figure appeared in the darkness. Then a man’s voice echoed: “The prophecy must disappear tonight.” Kelly felt her heart race. She understood nothing. But one thing was clear. Jasmine was not an ordinary woman. Her gaze changed. An invisible force seemed to fill the air around her. For the first time, Kelly saw the true nature of the woman who had haunted her dreams. She wasn’t human. She was a vampire. And facing her enemies, Jasmine would not hesitate for a single second to fight for her.
